AnimEigo has announced a new release date for its Blu-ray Disc reissue of the Megazone 23 anime trilogy, which is now set for November 12, moving from the previously planned November 10 date.
This upcoming release will feature the entire trilogy and include several bonus features that fans will enjoy.
Among these extras are the original commentary track from ADV Films, the English dub also from ADV Films, and the UK dub for Megazone 23 Part III.
Viewers can look forward to a commentary track featuring illustrator Gaku Miyao and producer Hiroki Sato, along with line art galleries and liner notes written by anime author Giles Poitras.
The Megazone 23 series began with a motorcycle robot anime that debuted in 1985, helping to popularize the original video animation (OVA) market.
The series was directed by the late Noboru Ishiguro, known for his work on classics like Space Battleship Yamato and The Legend of the Galactic Heroes.
He collaborated with well-known talents in the anime industry, including character designer Haruhiko Mikimoto, who worked on Macross and Orguss, and mechanical designer Shinji Aramaki, famous for his work on various mecha anime.
Following the original film, there were two more sequel OVAs released in 1986 and 1989. In August 2019, AnimEigo launched a successful Kickstarter campaign for the Megazone 23 Omega Edition, which aimed to produce a Blu-ray Disc that would include all three parts of the series.
The campaign quickly reached its funding goal of $100,000, achieving this milestone just one day after its launch.
The Omega Edition Blu-ray Disc was shipped to backers in March 2021, marking a significant moment for fans eager to own the complete collection.
In April 2021, AIC announced that it had entered an agreement to share ownership of the Megazone 23 franchise’s copyrights with Toei Agency.
Both companies are now working together on a reboot of the series, which includes remakes of the original Megazone 23 and its sequel, along with a new sequel titled Megazone 23 XI.
AIC had previously launched crowdfunding campaigns in 2017 to support promotional videos for these projects, both of which successfully met their funding goals.
