Meek Mill has made a statement in favor of his friends that the rap lyrics should not be used in Young Thug’s case. He took his suggestion to X, formerly Twitter, saying that the lyrics should not be taken as any kind of evidence to the case or any other cases.
Meek wrote that rappers always help each other while they are composing or writing a song. He also commented that nobody could say who wrote those lines because it was a high night.
He wrote in X:
It should be impossible to charge thug and lucci for lyrics because in the studio we all give each other lines and don’t remember who said what after a high night in the studio. I have done it with both of them … they both gave me lyrics b4… we all do this!
The prosecutors of the Young Thugs case were allowed by the court to show the lyrics and works of Young Thugs as evidence for their case. He also says that he has been frightened by the news of using someone’s musical works as evidence for criminal charges.
In July, the Atlanta City Council restricted the usage of the lyrics in any criminal cases and said these could not be recorded as evidence involving the rappers or anyone else. But the judges have now ruled out checking the lyrics and allowing the prosecutors to use them.
Meek Mill has been actively involved in fighting against the use of rap lyrics in criminal trials. Fat Joe also commented on the issue and said that many of the rappers, rap lyrics are not factual. Regarding his own music, he said that he was not telling the truth in many of his songs.
Atlanta City Council Passed Resolution on Use of Rap Lyrics as Evidence in Criminal Trials
Atlanta City Council passed a resolution in July not to use the recording or lyrics of any songs in any criminal cases.
It was during the ongoing YSL RICO trial that brought the attention of the judges to ask the prosecutors not to use the hip-hop songs as evidence. The Atlanta City Council, led by District 12 Council member Antonio Lewis, has taken a proactive step toward ensuring fair and just legal proceedings by passing a crucial resolution.
Lewis said that the resolution is a significant step towards rectifying an issue that has affected many of the artists and must protect the freedom of artistic expression while ensuring that the evidence used in criminal trials is relevant and reliable.
Once forwarded to the Georgia General Assembly, Council Member Lewis will continue to encourage lawmakers at the state level to give due consideration to this important issue.
Young Thug’s lyrics to be checked by the prosecutors
In November, one of the judges in Atlanta said that he would allow the prosecutors to crosscheck Young Thug’s rap lyrics and use it as evidence against them. Even though it was a violation of the First Amendment, judges have decided to proceed with it.
The prosecutors pointed out that the lyrics may play a key role in the trial that will start in the first month of 2024. Representing the superstar artist, attorney Brian Steel has asked the prosecutors not to use the creative expression of a person to convict his client.
He said that they are targeting the right to free speech, which is wrong. He also commented that just because he is singing about it does not mean he is part of any crime.
After a long hearing, one of the Judges in the trial rejected the arguments and said that they would not prosecute anyone based on the songs they wrote. The trial will be in 2024 and was delayed after one of his co-defendants was stabbed in jail.
All of his friends strongly believe that he will beat his RICO case, and his fans and well-wishers are waiting until 2024 as the trial is now delayed.
