The heart of the story lies in Brynn’s relationship with Maude. A childhood argument turned tragic, resulting in Maude’s accidental death.
What Happened to Maude?
In the movie’s early scenes, Brynn writes a letter to Maude, mentioning she saw Maude’s parents. She hides, not wanting them to see her. Maude’s parents clearly dislike Brynn, which becomes obvious when Brynn seeks help at the police station after an alien encounter.
Instead of help, she meets Maude’s parents there. They stare at each other, shocked. Maude’s mom spits at Brynn and leaves angrily. Her dad stays briefly but leaves too when Brynn avoids looking at him. This incident deepens the mystery around Maude’s death. Why do they dislike Brynn? Why does the town see her as an outsider?
As the movie progresses, Brynn faces the alien threats. She manages to escape from a creature that looks like her but encounters a bigger alien. Distracted, Brynn gets pulled into a flying saucer.
Inside, the aliens examine her. Suddenly, she wakes up at home. But she hasn’t escaped the aliens. She’s forced to remember the event that made the town turn against her.
We see young Brynn and her mom, then a young Brynn outside with red and blue police lights flashing. Maude’s dad appears upset, with Brynn watching in shock. Finally, in a field scene, we learn what happened.
