Co-host Melissa Leong tells viewers that the ten well-known faces at this year’s event are the best of the best.
Recap
Dessert Masters 2023 is on episode seven, and holy moley, we just lost one of the greatest! A cinema board featuring different movie titles welcomed our pastry stars. But instead of getting popcorn and watching a movie, they had to complete an elimination challenge that was modeled after a movie.
They were also informed that any task from this point on in the competition would result in elimination before the cook could even begin. Each contender was required to select a movie title to serve as the basis for their dish; the options included Transformers, Grease, The Godfather, Mission: Impossible, Star Trek, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and Pretty in Pink.
It was time to cook, with two and a half hours to spare and Kirsten comfortably perched on the gantry! Kay-Lene went with Pretty In Pink and served out a gorgeous pink pavlova that had been meticulously created to resemble a broken heart.
Though Mel and Amaury found the idea appealing, there were still unanswered questions about its capacity to overwhelm sweetness. Although the judges were impressed with Kay-Lene’s finished product, it was the flaws in the jelly that gave her cause for concern and put her in danger of grief.
Anna chose Breakfast at Tiffany’s and used the movie as inspiration to create a high tea set. Though Anna had high hopes for her meal, she was pressed for time and had to leave off important components to finish the last dessert.
Amaury complimented Anna’s bold decision for a tasting menu that was tastefully implemented and graceful during the tasting. Melissa questioned whether the food fulfilled the requirements, though.
Reynold’s choice was Star Trek, which inspired him to design a plated dessert that resembled Saturn. He even used one of Amaury’s methods to create the rings around Saturn. With little time left, Reynold considered using his Immunity Pin to fix a setting problem on the insert. But he pulled himself together and continued.
Mel observed that the dish lacked the elegance that Reynold’s masterpieces are known for, and Amaury concurred, unable to identify it as Reynold’s invention. Fortunately, the amazing flavour surpasses its appearance. Adriano’s culinary creation attempted to evoke the sentimental quality of a traditional diner milkshake by drawing inspiration from a memorable sequence in the film Grease.
He worked very hard to get the flavors just right, but unmolding the cups proved to be difficult. The judges commended his ambition and the dish’s overall quality, even though he had a small hiccup.
But Amaury and Mel had expected him to put on a more thrilling culinary show. Adriano was the third chef removed from the competition in an unexpected move.
