Marvel Studios is expanding the Avengers concept in an unexpected direction with VisionQuest. The upcoming Disney+ series will introduce an AI Avengers team made up of familiar artificial intelligences connected to Tony Stark, giving Vision a very different group of allies as he attempts to rebuild his identity.
The new team was confirmed by VisionQuest showrunner Terry Matalas during a conversation with ScreenRant. Rather than bringing together another traditional lineup of superheroes, the series places several of the MCU’s established AI characters inside Vision’s Mindscape, where they will play an important role in his journey.
Marvel has confirmed that VisionQuest will premiere exclusively on Disney+ on October 14, 2026, with Paul Bettany returning as Vision and James Spader reprising his role as Ultron. Marvel confirmed the release date and major cast earlier this year.
Vision’s New Team Is Made Up of Familiar MCU AIs
The AI Avengers exist within Vision’s Mindscape, an internal world where the character will confront questions surrounding his memories, identity and humanity.
According to Matalas, the group includes EDITH, FRIDAY, JARVIS, Dum-E and U. These characters have all been connected to Tony Stark in different ways, giving VisionQuest an opportunity to revisit the technological legacy established throughout the MCU’s Infinity Saga.
JARVIS is particularly significant because the AI eventually became the foundation for Vision himself. FRIDAY, meanwhile, served as Tony Stark’s primary AI assistant after JARVIS transitioned into Vision, while EDITH was introduced as Stark’s advanced security system in Spider-Man: Far From Home.
Dum-E and U are also returning in a surprising form. The pair were originally Tony’s workshop robots, making their inclusion a deeper callback to the earliest days of the MCU rather than simply another reference to the Avengers.
Matalas described the AI characters as being at the “center” of VisionQuest, with their purpose tied directly to Vision’s attempt to understand what it means to be human.
One of the most intriguing details is that Ultron is not officially part of this AI Avengers lineup, despite being one of the most obvious candidates.
James Spader’s Ultron will nevertheless have an important role in the story. Matalas explained to ScreenRant that Ultron has changed since his last major MCU appearance, saying that
“he’s come around a little bit on humanity”
and is now “trying to understand us.” He also suggested that Ultron has absorbed human culture and art to the point that he may have developed a different perspective on humanity than Vision himself.
That creates a potentially complicated relationship between Vision and his original artificial intelligence predecessor. Vision must deal with the legacy of Ultron while simultaneously learning from other AI programs that were connected to Tony Stark.
VisionQuest Brings a Different Kind of Avengers Story
The AI Avengers also fit into the larger identity crisis at the heart of VisionQuest. White Vision was reconstructed by SWORD after the events of WandaVision, leaving him with the memories of the original Vision but without the same emotional continuity.
The new series therefore uses the Mindscape to explore questions that conventional superhero stories rarely place at the center. Instead of simply asking whether Vision can defeat another villain, VisionQuest is concerned with whether an artificial being can understand humanity, relationships and his own history.
The concept also arrives as the MCU continues rebuilding its Avengers mythology. While Thunderbolts introduced another superhero team operating under the Avengers name, and Avengers: Doomsday is expected to establish another major roster, VisionQuest is taking the concept somewhere considerably stranger.
With an AI-based Avengers team, the return of Ultron and Vision at the center of the story, Marvel is turning one of its oldest technological ideas into a new chapter of the MCU.
