Even though Married at First Sight involves the participants being scientifically paired with one another by professional doctors of various fields, most couples made on the show do not stand against the test of time. We’ll be looking at the various couples from the show that have stayed married to date.
This American TV Show comes off mostly as a social experiment. The concept is a bit wild for the general public, but it does serve as a good reality drama series. The first season was released in July 2014 and was based on a Danish TV show, which was released a year prior.
The Concept of Married at First Sight
Every season around 3 to 5 couples are chosen and matched based on expert analysis of their respective personality trait. The participants are brought to the venue and are quite literally married to each other at first sight.
Once the participants are married, they are to spend the night at a hotel and proceed with their honeymoon the following day. After the honeymoon, they return back home and are required to live together as a married couple for the next eight weeks. After the completion of these eight weeks, the “Decision Day” arrives. On this day, the couples have to give an answer to whether they would continue married life with their partner or separate.
Over the years, and after 16 complete seasons of the show, a total of 64 couples were paired. Almost half of them had chosen to separate on “Decision Day,” and from the rest, quite a number have gotten or filed for divorce. Statistically, the show has only been able to deliver about one-fifth of the initial number of couples that are still together in real life.
Married at First Sight Season 13 Couples
The 13th season of the show was based in Houston, Texas, and featured five couples. Their current relationships are discussed in detail below.
1. Bao Huong Hoang and Johnny Lam
Bao and Johnny were both in their mid-thirties and had the audience rooting for the couple in the initial stages as both were coincidentally acquaintances from college. As the season progressed, the audience was not a fan of Johnny’s behavior toward Bao. He was often seen talking badly behind Bao’s back to her friends.
On MAFS Decision Day, Bao asked Johnny for a divorce, contradictory to Johnny’s decision that day. The two did not get involved in further drama and ended things on good terms. Johnny became friends with Myrla from the same season of MAFS, and Bao had seen Zack, also from MAFS S13.
2. Myrla Feria and Gil Cuero
The couple had a rocky start, with constant arguments and conflicting interests. The experts on the show had admittedly made them a couple in hopes the two contradictory personalities would attract. Myrla and Gil stated that eventually, while on set, the two did form a romantic connection with each.
On MAFS Decision Day, they were one of the two couples that decided to move forward with the marriage. They moved in together, and things were looking good for the couple until they came forward at the reunion, saying that their feelings felt forced. They are presently divorced, with Gil enjoying his life traveling. And Myrla is passionate about workout videos; she has also maintained a few friendships from the show.
3. Brett Layton and Ryan Ignasiak
Again not a great match on the show. Ryan Ignasiak was quite problematic throughout the 8-week journey. The time provided was for the couple to get to know each other and build trust, but Ryan completely messed that up by going to dating sites after the marriage. It is pretty evident, even before Decision Day, that the two would split.
Brett and Ryan seem to have no personal drama with each other after the season-ending. Most of Brett’s socials are private, but she occasionally is seen with some of the girls from season 13. As for Ryan, he often appears on the show in later seasons.
4. Michaela Clark and Zack Freeman
Michaela and Zack are not together as they decided to part ways on Decision Day. The couple certainly has some unresolved issues between them, and they refuse to converse with each other or even share the same stage. Their relationship had a rough start as the couple did not get enough time in the honeymoon stage with Zack having COVID.
Zack went on to date Bao after the end of the season; the two seemed to work things out before parting ways with cheating allegations against Zack. Michaela has stayed off the radar but has stated that she is working on herself regarding her anger issues.
5. Rachel Gordillo and Jose San Miguel
Rachel and Jose were the last standing couple from the season. The two had decided to stay married on Decision Day. The couple had some struggles after the end of the season but got over their differences and were reportedly together till December 2021.
Later, in an interview with People magazine, they disclosed that they were officially divorced. The two are now happy and successful in their own ways. Fans speculate Jose may have a new woman in his life, but he is yet to confirm it. As for Rachel, she spends her time traveling.
