All About Loving Yamada-kun at Lv999
Debuted in 2019, My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999, also known as Loving Yamada-kun at Lv999, was serialized on Comic Smart’s Ganma! Manga website and has collected seven manga volumes as of 2023. The success of this manga skyrocketed in a way words cannot describe.
Although it appears as if not many know about this manga series, deep in the manga community lies a niche group of people who enjoy this series beyond imagination. It looks like people like the romance genre and like Yamada and Akane’s love-hate relationship a lot more.
The manga gave birth to an anime adaptation that aired from April to June of this year and ended just a few days ago. The anime series received countless happy reviews and positive ratings. Almost everyone who watched the anime praised the story and characters and are desperately wishing for the release of a second season.
The anime is directed by Morio Asaka and is produced by Madhouse. The scripts were written by Yasuhiro Nakanishi, character designs were done by Kunihiko Hamada, and the music composition was handled by Mito and De De Mouse. The opening theme song, Gradation, is performed by the famous band, Kana-Boon, and the ending theme song, Trick Art, is performed by Ryujin Kiyoshi.
What’s the Series About?
When Akane’s boyfriend leaves her for another girl, she hesitates to play Forest of Savior, an RPG she used to play with him, but she goes back to the game anyway and unexpectedly encounters Akito Yamada, a gaming legend who coincidentally happens to be her guildmate.
Akane always has doe-eyes when she sees Akito, and she falls for him, but soon after, she learns Yamada loves his game and only his game. She still likes him, but will he have a change of heart, or will he continue to focus on his game?
The cast of the anime includes Akane Kinoshita, voiced by Inori Minase, Akito Yamada, voiced by Koki Uchiyama, Eita Sasaki, voiced by Natsuki Hanae, Runa Sasaki, voiced by Ai Kakuma, Momoko Maeda, voiced by Saori Onishi, Takezo Kamota, voiced by Nubuo Tobita and finally, Yukari Tsubaki voiced by Rio Tsuchiya.
A Comparison of the Manga and Anime
As usual, the anime adaptation has taken some liberties in tweaking the dialogues and character writing, making it slightly different from the manga. Yamada’s character in the anime falls flat at times. His well-rounded character in the manga fails to show itself in the anime.
On the other hand, Akane, in the manga, is a very layered character. She’s sweet, kind, fun, and intelligent. She constantly fights against her insecurities and stands strong in front of challenges thrown at her, and Yamada falls for her mainly due to these reasons. However, in the manga, Akane’s entire personality is boiled down to a sweet and cute gamer girl.
