Since Hwasa’s debut with MAMAMOO in June 2014, she has been a key figure in the group’s success, contributing to hit tracks like “Mr. Ambiguous,” “Piano Man,” “Um Oh Ah Yeh,” and many more. Alongside MAMAMOO’s rise as a national vocal group, Hwasa carved her path as a solo artist, making waves with her debut solo track, “TWIT,” in February 2019.
Following the success of “TWIT,” Hwasa continued her chart domination with solo hits like “Maria,” “I’m a B,” and “I Love My Body,” solidifying her status as a unique icon. As anticipation builds for her next album, Hwasa reflects on her solo journey in a recent interview with Star News, marking her 10th debut anniversary.
- Interviewer: As a female solo artist, your image used to focus heavily on ‘sexy,’ but it seems like your spectrum has expanded a lot over the past few years. Especially, in each title track, you use unique themes. As you venture fearlessly into various genres and challenges, what is the driving force behind your activities, and what do you consider most important?
- Hwasa: I think the most important thing to me is ‘thinking’. As I continuously think and contemplate, there are always question marks and exclamation points entangled in my mind. It can be burdensome at times, but I consider it my destiny as someone in this profession.
- Interviewer: The Korean Lunar New Year, Seollal, is approaching. How do you usually spend Seollal? What are your plans for this year?
- Hwasa: I usually take a trip to fully relax. I think it’s a very important time.
- Interviewer: As you welcome the new year, do you have any wishes or goals for the coming year?
- Hwasa: Above all, health is my top priority. I want to quickly share more songs with MooMoos (MAMAMOO fan club) and all those who wait for me, and I want to show more performances. I plan to spend this year very busy.
- Interviewer: I’m curious about any special activities you are preparing for your 10th debut anniversary or your plans for this year.
- Hwasa: I’m pouring everything into preparing the album. And I want to meet more fans. My heart is fluttering, and I hope you all have high expectations for this year too.
After Hwasa’s revelation of wanting to showcase more performances and stay busy this year, fans reading the Q&A are hopeful for a potential solo tour.
