Mahira Khan About the Time She Faced Backlash
Mahira Khan described the intense criticism she received after co-starring with Shah Rukh Khan in “Raees” in a recent interview.
She added that the circumstances had a negative impact on her mental health and ultimately resulted in her receiving a bipolar disorder diagnosis.
‘Raees’ came out during the fallout from the Uri incident, which caused tensions between Pakistan and India and had an impact on the arts and sports as well as other areas of life.
She also discussed the incident from 2017, in which images of her smoking with actor Ranbir Kapoor appeared on the internet.
Among the most well-known Pakistani performers to be affected by this unofficial ban were Mahira, fellow actor Fawad Khan, and singers Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Atif Aslam.
Mahira Khan on How Things Got Messy
During an interview with the FWhy podcast, she discussed how this experience affected her mental health and said, “That year was rough.”
Verna and Raees were both released in the same year that the entire picture incident occurred, and it crushed my heart. It was unanticipated.
I had completed the movie, and everything was going well. Then, this attack occurs out of the blue, and everything turns political. There’s politics involved at all times. It’s always political with India. But that things would become so disorganized.”
The Actress Received Threats
Mahira talked about how she would get hateful comments and threats. “Relentless tweets, never-ending. As a matter of fact, I would receive frightful calls.
All I wanted was for it to come out in my nation. I didn’t care that I couldn’t travel to India to promote it or enjoy it.
Shah Rukh Khan is quite popular here, and I knew that people would flock to the theaters to see it. That broke my heart. It surfaced the melancholy and anxiety I’ve always had inside of me,” the woman claimed.
Mahira on Negative Comments
“That was a hard time for me,” she went on. I sensed an attack. Their channels featured my photo all the time, and even now, I’m receiving hateful tweets, threats, and remarks.
“Leave here,” they said, and I responded, “I was never there; I’m here; I’m home.” And “Why did you even go?” is what folks at home are asking you.
My faith started to wane at that point since I was under attack from all sides. I experienced such acute anxiety that I eventually passed out from a panic attack.
Her Bipolar Disorder Diagnosis
Mahira then discussed the moment she received a bipolar disorder diagnosis. She claimed that the diagnosis came about eventually and that she had spent the previous seven years taking medication.
“I ended up in a psychiatrist’s office,” Mahira stated, “but I need you to know that you have manic depression. We’ll talk about everything later.”
I’m unsure if I should say it now that I’m saying it for the first time. I’ve been on antidepressants for six and a half years. I attempted to walk away from them in the midst, and I entered a really dark place.
Mahira Khan on Depression
Mahira reflected on the disastrous viral photo incident from 2017 and said, “It (the backlash) exposed the anxiety and depression that I had been hiding.” For me, it was a difficult period. I sensed an attack.
The ongoing criticism: You’re receiving nasty remarks and tweets from their networks (which are Indian channels). At that point, my trust was shaken, and I started to experience such intense worry that I eventually passed out from a panic attack.
I had never attended therapy before that day. However, that didn’t work out since I saw multiple therapists. That year was difficult; I had trouble sleeping, and my hands used to shake.”
