The fan-favorite NBA team, known as the Los Angeles Lakers, had been having quite a rough run on the basketball court, but they finally managed to break their four-game losing streak on Sunday, 7 January 2024, by defeating the Los Angeles Clippers.
The Lakers could finally take a breath of relief at the Crypto.com Arena in Downtown Los Angeles as they narrowly defeated the Clippers with a scoreline of 106-103. To date, they have lost 19 out of 37 matches in the NBA 2023-24 season (winning less than half their matches) and stand 10th in the Western Conference rankings.
According to the Lakers’ head coach, Darvin Ham, the key was to have an unbiased viewpoint when assessing this team. Following the Lakers’ loss to Memphis on Friday, 5 January, Ham, with a rise in his voice, chastised his team players for paying too much attention to small details.
Ham spoke up for a little bit, stating, “This is the NBA, man.” He further explained how the championship is like a marathon, where one needs to consider the entirety of it.
He passionately exclaimed how this was the same team that was known for its amazing performance, and he finds it “ludicrous” that people feel like they are “living” or “dying” depending upon the outcome of each individual game.
The remarks were poorly received by both Lakers supporters and those inside the team’s building, and so Ham attempted to clarify his stand on Sunday before his team’s game against the Clippers.
He believed that victory in the tournament is a process of analyzing their performance in its entirety to go beyond what they are doing short term to reach the big picture.
He believes that every team has its “peaks” and “valleys,” and they were just experiencing a low point that they would eventually overcome.
“I’m not sure,” Ham answered while laughing, making a joke that he would know by the speed at which they would strike the ground. It’s difficult to know exactly where you stand in the fog of the season, as it is in a game, and the Lakers’ 106-103 victory against the Clippers on Sunday served as a lesson in this regard, proving that they can always climb back to the peak.
A Difficult Fight to Victory
In their opening encounter with the Clippers’ trio of Paul George, James Harden, and Kawhi Leonard, the Lakers appeared to be greatly outnumbered. It was simple to compare the Lakers’ struggles to score points with the Clippers’ effortless ability to get the shots they desired. It was also impossible to overlook how the Clippers forced the Lakers to give up their positions on both sides of the game.
However, as the game went on, the Lakers persisted — mostly because of some careless Clippers play and a few ill-advised three-point attempts — and their situation started to change.
The difference between the two teams started to close, and the Lakers began to reach an advantage by the time James got up and dunked on Paul George, while on the other hand, D’Angelo Russell, who had just returned from injury, started making transition threes.
The star player LeBron James stated that they would now try to use this to propel themselves into a somewhat better play. However, it still doesn’t change the reality that they had been playing relatively below expectations for the past 11 or 12 games.
However, LeBron agreed that it was a solid start on Sunday, and with some luck, they can get going from here and keep going. James scored 25 points for the team and, therefore, with the help of Anthony Davis, who scored 22 points, pushed the Lakers towards their second straight win against the Clippers while simultaneously snapping a four-game losing streak.
