Studio Ghibli fans who love coffee can rejoice, as the studio’s official online store, Donguri Sora, has brought back a popular product: the “Porco Rosso Kalita Hand Grinder Coffee Mill,” first introduced in 2021.
Although Donguri Sora sells several other coffee-related items, including mugs, tumblers, and a dripper, the coffee grinder is currently the only product of its kind available.
This makes it a unique piece of merchandise perfect for collectors. It’s described as being easy to hold and use with one hand, with an adjustable grind so owners can choose their preferred size—whether coarse for cold brew or French press or fine for pour-over cone or espresso.
Limited-Edition ‘Porco Rosso’ Kalita Coffee Grinder Celebrates Ghibli’s Legacy with Unique Design
The grinder is made in collaboration with Kalita, a family-owned Japanese company established in the 1950s and headquartered in Yokohama. Kalita is well-known for its high-quality coffee equipment, including drippers, pots, servers, and decanters, and is often compared to brands like Hario or Chemex.
This Ghibli collaboration features a laser-engraved design of the smiling protagonist from the 1992 film Porco Rosso, both written and directed by studio founder Hayao Miyazaki. Above the character, the phrase “Enjoy Your Break Time” is also laser-engraved into the wood. The wood grain of each coffee grinder is slightly different, making each item unique.
Given its rarity, the “Porco Rosso Kalita Hand Grinder Coffee Mill” is limited edition, with a maximum of three purchases per person (including previous buys). It currently retails on Donguri Sora for 8,580 yen, or about US$59. Although the online store does not ship internationally, the coffee grinder first appeared in 2021 and can sometimes be found on e-commerce sites like eBay.
A Tribute to Aviation with Themes of Feminism and Anti-Fascism
One of Studio Ghibli’s most underrated films by modern audiences, Porco Rosso follows the adventures of a former World War I Italian fighter pilot who has been turned into an anthropomorphic pig due to a mysterious curse.
Now living on a secluded island and working as a bounty hunter, Porco Rosso is shot down by American ace Donald Curtis and presumed dead. He repairs his fighter plane and seeks justice. The film is seen as Miyazaki’s tribute to his love for flight and aviation, with deeper messages of feminism and anti-fascism.
Porco Rosso is available to stream on Max for U.S. viewers, along with the rest of Studio Ghibli’s extensive film catalog. Viewers in Canada, Latin America, Europe, Africa, Australia, or New Zealand can watch the studio’s movies on Netflix.
