“Let the Team Cook”: CD Projekt RED Says The Witcher 4 Will Be Worth the Wait, Calls It Its Biggest and Most Ambitious Game Yet

CD Projekt RED has finally provided fans with a clearer idea of when The Witcher 4 could arrive. Joint CEO Michał Nowakowski confirmed that the highly anticipated RPG is currently targeting a 2028 release window, though he stressed that this is not a firm launch date. The announcement came in a pre-Gamescom message in which Nowakowski also revealed that the game will not appear at Gamescom 2026.

According to Nowakowski, CD Projekt RED is taking its time with the next mainline Witcher game. More than 500 developers are currently working on the project, which he described as the studio’s

“biggest, boldest, and most ambitious game to date.”

The game will launch a new saga with Ciri in the lead role and is expected to feature a huge open world, action-focused gameplay, and a story designed to leave a lasting impact. 

The Witcher 4 Is Aiming for 2028

Nowakowski addressed the question fans have been asking for years: when will The Witcher 4 finally be released? While CD Projekt RED is still not ready to announce an exact date, the studio is now targeting 2028.

“We’re not ready to share an exact date, I can tell you this: The Witcher 4 is targeting a 2028 release window,”

Nowakowski said. He then asked fans to remain patient, adding,

“I know it’s a bit of a wait and you’d love to play it sooner, but let the team cook. It will be worth the wait.”

The 2028 window means The Witcher 4 could arrive 13 years after The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which launched in 2015. Given the scale of the new project and the importance of the series to CD Projekt RED, the studio appears determined to avoid rushing its next major release.

Although The Witcher 4 will not be shown at Gamescom 2026, fans will still have new Witcher content to look forward to. CD Projekt RED is focusing its Gamescom presence on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Songs of the Past, a new expansion starring Geralt of Rivia that is scheduled to launch in 2027.
