Remembring Michael Gambon
Gambon started his acting journey in the theater during the early 1960s and later moved on to work in television and film. Some of his memorable movie roles include playing a deranged mob leader in Peter Greenaway’s “The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover” in 1989 and taking on the role of an elderly King George V in Tom Hooper’s “The King’s Speech” in 2010.
But the character he’s best known for is Dumbledore in the Harry Potter series. He assumed this role from the third film onwards, following the death of Richard Harris in 2004. Gambon didn’t hold his performance in very high regard and playfully remarked that he essentially played himself “with a fake beard and a long robe.”
Michael John Gambon was born in Dublin on October 19, 1940. His mother had a job as a seamstress, and his father worked as an engineer. When Gambon was six years old, his family moved to Camden Town in London. They made this move because his father was seeking work as part of the city’s rebuilding efforts after the War.
In 1962, he tried out for the renowned Shakespearean actor Olivier, who chose him as one of the original members of the National Theatre at the Old Vic. This group also featured other talented young actors like Derek Jacobi and Maggie Smith as they emerged onto the scene.
