More than a decade after its release, Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx’s action film, Law Abiding Citizen, is catching new attention on Netflix.

While critics gave it a low 26% on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s now riding high in Netflix’s international Top 10, sitting at number 5. The movie features Butler and Foxx as characters with very different approaches to justice.

The film follows Clyde Shelton (Butler), who has lost his wife and daughter to the criminal Clarence Darby (Christian Stolte). Although there is strong evidence against Darby, mistakes by law enforcement lead prosecutor Nick Rice (Foxx) to make a deal with the killer.

Shelton feels betrayed by Rice and the justice system, waiting ten years to seek revenge on Darby. His anger also targets Rice for allowing Darby a second chance.

The cast also includes Viola Davis as the Mayor of Philadelphia, Leslie Bibb as Rice’s assistant, Bruce McGill as the Philadelphia DA, Regina Hall as Rice’s wife, and Michael Kelly as a CIA agent.

The Future of ‘Law Abiding Citizen’

Despite its poor Rotten Tomatoes score, the movie was a hit with audiences, earning nearly $128 million from a $50 million budget. There were even plans for a sequel, with Butler’s production company and other key figures involved. However, there have been no recent updates on the project.

Netflix subscribers are now discovering or rediscovering Law Abiding Citizen. It’s also available for U.S. viewers on Starz.
