According to reports from The Athletic’s Shams Charania and Jovan Buha, the Lakers have talked to JJ Redick about possibly taking over for Darvin Ham. They see Redick as someone who could help out in the short term and eventually become a leader for the team, similar to Pat Riley.
However, skepticism arose on Colin Cowherd’s The Herd, where Rachel Nichols questioned Redick’s readiness to handle the demanding role of managing championship-bound superstars due to his lack of coaching experience.
Nichols argued that comparing Redick to Riley, who had extensive assistant coaching experience before becoming a head coach, is unfair. Riley’s journey from Lakers broadcaster to assistant coach before assuming the head coaching role contrasts with Redick’s background.
Right now, JJ Redick is the front-runner to become the next head coach of the Lakers
Shams Charania hinted on The Pat McAfee Show that Redick might be the top contender for the Lakers coaching job, given his tenure with the team and the organization’s interest in him. Redick’s meeting with the Lakers during the Draft Combine in Chicago further solidified his position.
Charania stated, “JJ Redick is the guy around the league that everyone believes is the frontrunner for this job.”
Despite Redick’s lack of NBA head coaching experience, his basketball insights, punditry, and podcasting endeavors, including discussions with LeBron James, showcase his expertise and potential for a coaching role.
