Kwak Dong-yeon, known for his role as Hong Soo-cheol in tvN’s hit drama “Queen of Tears,” recently sat down for an interview with Sports Chosun to discuss his transformative journey and plans for the future.
In “Queen of Tears”, Kwak Dong-yeon portrays Hong Hae-in’s younger brother, Hong Soo-cheol, who portrays a range of emotions from comedy to intense drama and action sequences. To embody the character’s evolution, Kwak underwent a significant physical transformation by gaining and then losing 8 kilograms strategically throughout the series.
During the interview, Kwak Dong-yeon revealed the method behind his weight changes, explaining, “I gained weight initially to create a noticeable difference in the early and later stages of the character’s journey. After a pivotal moment in the storyline, I worked on losing the weight gradually, aligning with the character’s narrative arc.”
Reflecting on the acting challenges he faced, particularly in conveying deep emotions, Kwak shared anecdotes of preparing for scenes under challenging circumstances.
He humorously recounted times when sleep deprivation inadvertently influenced his performances, saying, “There were moments when I showed up on set after staying awake for days, unintentionally acting on autopilot. I even experimented with intentionally staying awake for three days to test its impact on my acting—although a 30-minute nap on the way to set became a necessity!”
Looking ahead, Kwak Dong-yeon discussed his plans and the diverse opportunities awaiting him post ” Queen of Tears.” He expressed gratitude for receiving proposals across various genres and emphasized the importance of choosing projects that align with his interests and strengths as an actor.
