Krysten Ritter looks back fondly on her time working alongside James Van Der Beek on the short-lived sitcom Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23. Reflecting on the experience, Ritter, now 43, shared with Us Weekly how much she enjoyed working with Van Der Beek. Their chemistry was undeniable, and she recalls their time together with warmth and laughter.
One moment that still stands out for Ritter is when Van Der Beek’s character competed on Dancing with the Stars in a plotline years before he would appear on the show in real life in 2019. Ritter described how she and Van Der Beek got along so well, and how the memories from their time together still bring her joy. She said, “The Dancing With the Stars stuff still makes me laugh.”
Ritter’s favorite moment from the show happened in an episode where her character, Chloe, pretended to be an editor for People magazine. She used her position to put Van Der Beek on the magazine’s cover, even delivering a memorable “smack wich” to an employee, slapping them on both sides of their face. Ritter described this scene as “gold” and praised the show for being “ahead of its time,” reflecting on how fun and well-written it was.
Her love for the character was clear, and she added that the episode was one of her proudest moments in comedy. The actress recently revisited the episode, recalling how it still made her laugh and how much she enjoyed playing the role. Ritter mentioned, “I love playing that character so much.”
Ritter expressed deep gratitude for the diverse roles she’s been able to play throughout her career. In addition to Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23, Ritter also fondly remembers her roles in Jessica Jones and Breaking Bad. She shared how lucky and grateful she felt to have worked on such exciting and memorable projects.
Reflecting on these experiences, Ritter noted that Jessica Jones, in particular, holds a special place in her heart, as the series is a part of her daily life. Likewise, she is incredibly proud to have been part of Breaking Bad, which remains one of her most beloved roles.
Ritter’s new role in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 marks an exciting milestone in her career. This film will be one of the first projects her 5-year-old son, Bruce, will be able to see. The actress, who shares Bruce with her partner Adam Granduciel, expressed how meaningful it is for her to be able to share her work with him.
Ritter also recalled a funny memory from when Bruce was younger. At around 15 months old, he would watch her play a “big scary mean witch” in the movie Nightbooks. She would practice her lines in front of him, and he would laugh at her costumes. Ritter joked that his fascination with Halloween might stem from being exposed to such dramatic, over-the-top moments from her early work.
Ritter is thrilled to know that Sonic 3 will be the first film her son will fully experience. As for other projects, she teased how much Bruce enjoys her role as Jessica Jones, even though he won’t be able to watch the show just yet. For now, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be the first of his mother’s impressive body of work, and Ritter couldn’t be more excited for this new chapter with her son his mother’s impressive body of work, and Ritter couldn’t
