Global streaming giants Netflix and Disney+ are returning with ambitious science fiction dramas after recent disappointments in their drama lineups.
Disney+ has struggled to replicate the success of “Moving” and other hits, with recent releases like “The Impossible Heir” failing to resonate with audiences, particularly due to criticisms of the lead actress’s performance.
Similarly, Netflix faced challenges with dramas like “Gyeongseong Creature,” featuring Park Seo-Joon and Han So-hee, which received harsh feedback for its narrative shortcomings and unconvincing characters.
In a bid to revitalize their offerings, both platforms are turning to science fiction. Netflix will debut “Parasyte: The Grey” on May 5, a series adapted from a popular Japanese manga about parasites and humans coexisting, directed by Yeon Sang-ho of “Train To Busan” fame.
Meanwhile, Disney+ aims to bounce back with “Blood Free,” starring Han Hyo-joo, who previously headlined “Moving.” This futuristic drama, penned by Lee Soo-yeon of the acclaimed “Stranger” series, revolves around mysterious deaths linked to a biotechnology company in 2025.
With a production cost of 24 billion won for 10 episodes, “Blood Free” boasts advanced VFX and CG technologies, featuring acclaimed actors like Joo Ji-hoon and Lee Hee-jun.
Despite initial setbacks, anticipation remains high for the upcoming releases on Netflix and Disney+. Netflix is gearing up for the highly anticipated Season 2 of “Squid Game,” set to be a major highlight of the year with a hefty production budget of 100 billion won.
Disney+, on the other hand, promises a stellar lineup, including Song Kang-ho, Kim Hye-soo, and Cha Seung-won, hinting at a strong resurgence in quality content after recent challenges.
Both platforms are banking on science fiction dramas to capture global audiences and regain momentum in the competitive streaming platforms, promising fresh and compelling narratives that transcend traditional genres.
