The Kingdom Hearts story has become so vast that Square Enix brought in a dedicated lore expert to help ensure the franchise remains consistent as Kingdom Hearts IV moves closer to release. The series now spans numerous games, characters, timelines, and interconnected story arcs, making continuity increasingly difficult to manage.
Speaking in a recent interview with Famitsu, series creator Tetsuya Nomura explained that the growing scale of the franchise created a need for someone to organize its complicated lore. He said,
“As the Kingdom Hearts series has continued, the number of characters has inevitably increased, and the story has become more complex.”
A Lore Expert Is Now Checking Kingdom Hearts IV

According to Nomura, the staff member previously worked on organizing and compiling information from past Kingdom Hearts entries, making the material easier to understand. The same person also helped explain the series’ complicated settings and scenarios to Disney, eventually becoming part of the Kingdom Hearts IV team in an official proofreading role.
Nomura clarified that the person’s job is not to control the overall story direction. Instead, the lore expert reviews the script to identify potential contradictions with previously established information.
The role has become particularly important because Kingdom Hearts IV has strong connections to the χ series and earlier mobile game storylines. Nomura explained that the proofreader was especially suited to the project because of this deep connection to the franchise’s past.
With Kingdom Hearts IV officially targeting a late 2027 release, the new continuity role could prove crucial as Square Enix prepares the next major chapter of the series.
