Kinema Citrus is stepping into new territory with its latest original anime project, Goodbye, Lara. Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid, this anime isn’t a straightforward adaptation but instead reimagines the tale with a modern twist.
The story follows the mermaid Lara, who dies and is reborn in contemporary Japan 200 years later.
To celebrate their 15th anniversary, Kinema Citrus released a concept trailer for Goodbye, Lara, showcasing an art style reminiscent of 80s and 90s anime.
Though the final look may differ, the trailer provides a nostalgic look what fans can expect. Known for titles like Made in Abyss, The Rising of the Shield Hero, and My Happy Marriage, Kinema Citrus is taking an interesting turn with this retro-inspired aesthetic.
The anime boasts a talented team, with Takushi Koide directing. Koide, a key animator for Bocchi the Rock! and Cardfight!! Vanguard will+Dress, is joined by Shiori Tani as the animation director, Naoki Yoshibe handling water effects, and Alfredo Sirica composing the music.
This team promises to bring a unique and engaging experience to the screen, blending classic influences with modern storytelling.
