Kevin Costner, 69, has confirmed his involvement in an upcoming project, where he will both star in and produce a feature film. The script, owned by Costner himself, is set to be adapted for the screen. Ariel Vromen is slated to direct the film, as per Deadline. Details regarding the plot remain undisclosed, with production scheduled to commence in 2025, according to reports from Deadline.
Vromen previously directed Costner in the 2016 thriller Criminal, featuring Gary Oldman and Tommy Lee Jones.
The filmmaker wrote on Instagram about the news Tuesday, “So excited to be back in the ring with my dear friend, mentor and the incredible talented Kevin Costner on his incredible longtime passion project. Keep doing good for others, keep giving. Don’t ask for anything in return – don’t worry it will come back 100%.”
Another project that the Dances With Wolves star has long been involved in is the multi-part Western Horizon: An American Saga, produced by Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line. Split into two chapters, this cinematic venture is set to debut in theaters on June 28 and August 16.
Costner’s commitment to “Horizon” as director, star, and co-writer alongside Jon Baird led to a reduction in his involvement in “Yellowstone”, the acclaimed series where he portrays rancher John Dutton. His portrayal garnered him a Golden Globe last year.
The second half of season 5 was confirmed as the final installment of the show, set to premiere in November. Reports suggested that Costner’s restricted shooting schedule had been a point of contention for creator Taylor Sheridan.
“Yellowstone” and “Horizon” were topics of discussion during Costner’s divorce proceedings with ex-wife Christine in 2023. In a child support hearing in September, Costner testified that he had desired to return for a sixth season of “Yellowstone” but declined due to a reduced offer in compensation compared to previous seasons. He also mentioned encountering creative differences in making his decision.
Arriving in 2024 is Vromen’s upcoming project, “1992”, featuring Tyrese Gibson, Scott Eastwood, and the late Ray Liotta.
Another recent update from Costner is his announcement of the “newest addition to the family” on Instagram, revealing a new puppy. The actor-director expressed his affection, stating, “I’m already in love with this special guy.”
This news came after Costner’s 69th birthday on Jan. 18, which he commemorated with another Instagram post featuring a throwback photo from his debut film, 1981’s “Malibu Hot Summer.”
