Kelly Clarkson reveals that her ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock, used to mentally abuse her during their marriage by making her feel insecure. Brandon Blackstock was not only Kelly’s husband but also her manager and, therefore, had an interest in her professional life. Kelly shared that the time she was to be a part of ‘The Voice’ as a coach, Brandon told her she wasn’t sexy enough for the role.
After being in a marriage for seven years, Kelly filed a divorce case in 2020. Along with Brandon being charged with securing Kelly’s contract with several gigs, which was a line he wasn’t supposed to cross as it was something to be dealt with by a talent agent, He was also asked to pay back all the amounts to Kelly that he had attained through the contracts.
Kelly’s husband didn’t find her “sexy.”
The New York Post reportedly stated that the Grammy winner, Kelly Clarkson, has claimed that her former husband and manager, Brandon Blackstock, didn’t think that his wife was ‘sexy’ enough to be a coach on ‘The Voice, ‘in court last year.
As her manager, Brandon had unlawfully procured deals with different gigs, as per the rights her talent agent at CAA should’ve handled. Therefore, in November, Brandon was ordered to pay back wife Kelly $2,641,375, which he obtained unlawfully through the procuring’s.
As per the documents further obtained by the outlet, Kelly, while testifying to the California Labour Commissioner, claimed that Brandon told her that ‘The Voice’ was “looking for a more sex symbol type,” followed by citing Rihana as an example for the same role.
Enforcing the insecurities inside Kelly during ‘The Voice’ was not the only time Brandon tried to mentally abuse her. In 2018, before she had joined the NBC singing competition series, Brandon had told her that the network was looking for someone with a ‘diverse’ panel of coaches and someone who was black. Kelly reportedly claimed that Brandon told her she was ‘too similar’ to Blake Shelton (the then coach) to join the show.
Per the Post, the ‘Miss Independent’ singer was asked how much ability she holds to recount the specifics of this conversation with her former husband, to which she responded, “Well, a wife doesn’t forget a time she gets told she’s not a sex symbol, that stays.
During November’s filing, Kelly claimed that Brandon had secured her contracts with The Voice, The Kelly Clarkson Show, Norwegian Cruise Line, Wayfair, and Billboard Music Awards. He had taken fees in return for all of it by keeping Kelly and her talent team aware of it.
Whereas Brandon was ruled not to cross that line as a manager with The Kelly Clarkson Show contract. As per the documents, Clarkson’s team at Creative Artist Agency should have been conducting all four deals.
The ruling related to this attempt by Brandon read, “Under the Talent Agencies Act (TAA), a manager, like any person without a talent agent license, cannot procure or attend to procure employment for artists.”
As per the documents, Brandon, for conducting the dealings, got paid commissions for each of Kelly’s aforementioned gigs, including $1,983,155.70 from ‘The Voice’ for her deals as the coach, $208,125 for a promotional deal with NCL, $450,000 for Kelly’s collaboration with Wayfair, and $93.30 for a multi-year contract as the Billboard Music Awards host, and he has been asked to pay back all of the unlawfully obtained money from the dealing to his ex-wife, Kelly Clarkson.
Kelly and Brandon were married in 2013 until Kelly filed a divorce case in June 2020, which was finalized after 2 years, with Brandon returning all the money to Kelly. They both, as a couple, share a daughter, River Rose, and a son, Remington Alexander.
