Naoya Matsumoto, the creator of Kaiju No. 8, has recommended another manga currently running in Weekly Shonen Jump. His latest endorsement is for Atsushi Nakamura’s Roku’s House of Oddities, a supernatural horror-comedy series that has been gaining attention for its unusual characters and blend of comedy and horror.
Matsumoto’s recommendation appears on the promotional wraparound cover, known as an obi, of the manga’s second collected volume. Published in Japan on November 4, 2026, the volume features a special comment from the Kaiju No. 8 creator praising Nakamura’s distinctive approach to character design and storytelling.
Matsumoto particularly pointed out the contrast between the characters’ appearances and their everyday lives. He praised how characters who look as though they belong in an intense battle manga instead spend their time living relatively peaceful, laid-back lives. He also highlighted Nakamura’s art style, explaining that this contrast gives the series its distinctive and comfortable charm.
What Is Roku’s House of Oddities About?
Written and illustrated by Atsushi Nakamura, Roku’s House of Oddities follows Seiroku Akari, nicknamed Roku, an ordinary high school student who belongs to his school’s science club. Unlike people fascinated by supernatural mysteries, Roku is determined to prove that urban legends and curses are not real.
His investigation takes an unexpected turn when he attempts five rituals connected to a local collection of urban legends called The Moonlit Tales of Kokubunji. After performing the rituals over five days, he ends up cursed by five different supernatural entities.
Instead of simply haunting him from a distance, the incomplete manifestations of these curses become part of his everyday life. Roku must investigate the stories behind them while dealing with the strange situation unfolding inside his home.
The official MANGA Plus series description identifies the manga as a combination of comedy, horror, supernatural elements and slice-of-life storytelling. Its unusual premise helps explain the contrast Matsumoto highlighted in his recommendation.

Naoya Matsumoto Is the Latest Major Creator to Recommend the Manga
Matsumoto’s endorsement is not the first time Nakamura’s work has received recognition from an established manga creator. The first collected volume previously featured a recommendation from Yusuke Nomura, the artist behind Blue Lock. Having another prominent Weekly Shonen Jump creator praise the series with its second volume gives the manga additional visibility among readers.
Nakamura also has previous experience working in the magazine. Before launching Roku’s House of Oddities, he serialized the science-fiction comedy Agravity Boys in Weekly Shonen Jump from December 2019 to January 2021. The series was later collected into seven volumes.
The new manga has also received recognition through the 2026 Next Manga Awards, placing ninth in the print manga category. The award is decided through reader participation and voting, making its result another indication of the series’ growing readership. The official Next Manga Awards 2026 results confirm its ninth-place finish.
Readers outside Japan can also follow the series through VIZ Media’s Shonen Jump platform and Shueisha’s MANGA Plus service, where English chapters are available.
With Matsumoto’s recommendation adding to the attention surrounding its second volume, Roku’s House of Oddities is continuing to establish itself as one of the newer supernatural comedy titles in Weekly Shonen Jump.
