“Kaiju No. 8,” which premiered its first episode in April 2024, has quickly captured the interest of fans. Despite receiving mixed reviews for its anime adaptation, the enthusiasm among viewers remains strong as they eagerly anticipate new episodes. The initial episode introduced the world and protagonist Kafka Hibino, setting the stage for a story that promises significant developments, including Kafka’s transformation into a Kaiju.
The manga, created by Naoya Matsumoto, began serialization in July 2022 on Shueisha’s Shonen Jump Plus app and website. It gradually gained popularity, leading to the announcement of an anime adaptation set for an April 2024 release, made public in mid-2023.
Kafka’s Transformation into a Kaiju Contrasts with Eren Yeager’s Turn into a Monster in Attack on Titan
The first episode lays the groundwork by presenting the Kaiju monsters, the Defense Force, the Clean-Up crew, and Kafka Hibino. By the end of this introductory episode, Kafka undergoes a dramatic transformation into one of the monsters he initially aimed to eliminate.
Some fans have drawn comparisons between “Kaiju No. 8” and Hajime Isayama’s “Attack on Titan,” suggesting that the former might be seen as a derivative work. Both series feature protagonists—Kafka Hibino and Eren Yeager—who transform into the very monsters that threaten their worlds.
Each protagonist shares a background of being perceived as weak yet driven by a strong desire to protect humanity. The transformation processes differ: Eren’s change occurs through a serum injection and consuming the Founding Titan, whereas Kafka’s transformation results from a small Kaiju forcing its way into his body.
Despite these similarities, including parallels between Mina Ashiro’s combat prowess and Mikasa Ackermann’s skills, “Kaiju No. 8” diverges from “Attack on Titan” in significant ways. While both Kafka and Eren struggle to control their monstrous forms initially, “Attack on Titan” is noted for its darker themes and deeper philosophical undertones that explore the destructive nature of war.
Kafka’s transformation into a Kaiju occurs after multiple failed attempts to join the Defense Force. He resigns himself from his job on the Clean-Up crew. During a routine task of dismantling Kaiju remains, Kafka and his colleague Reno Ichikawa are attacked.
Kafka sends Reno for help, but Reno returns to assist Kafka, who is severely injured. The Defense Force, led by Mina Ashiro, arrives just in time to rescue Kafka and Reno, efficiently neutralizing the threat and taking the injured duo to the hospital. While recovering, Kafka encounters a small Kaiju that enters his body through his mouth, triggering his transformation into a Kaiju.
