Adult Swim is about to launch a new anime adaptation of Junji Ito’s horror manga Uzumaki. The series will air on Adult Swim’s Toonami block beginning September 28 at 12:30 a.m. EDT.
It will also be available for streaming on Max starting the next day. The anime was initially planned to premiere on Toonami in 2020 but faced several delays, moving first to 2021, then to October 2022, and finally being pushed back again in June 2022.
The anime features a strong voice cast. Abby Trott will voice Kirie Goshima, Robbie Daymond will play Shuichi Saito and Cristina Vee will be Azami Kurotani.
Doug Stone will provide the voice for Kirie’s father, while Aaron LaPlante will voice Shuichi’s father.
Mona Marshall will take on the role of Shuichi’s mother, and Max Mittelman will voice Katsutoshi Matsuzaki.
The series is directed by Hiroshi Nagahama, known for Mushi-Shi, and is produced by Studio Drive and Studio Akatsuki with Production I.G. USA and Adult Swim.
The music will be composed by Colin Stetson, who worked on Hereditary. The manga Uzumaki was published from 1998 to 1999 and tells the story of a town haunted by strange events related to spirals.
Viz Media released the manga in three volumes between 2007 and 2008 and later compiled it into an omnibus edition. The manga is well-known for its eerie plot and distinctive horror style.
Before this anime adaptation, Uzumaki was made into a live-action film in 2000, starring Eriko Hatsune and Fan Fhi. The film adapted Ito’s unsettling story and contributed to the manga’s popularity.
