Jujutsu Kaisen has made a bold move by announcing the theatrical release of some of the most talked-about episodes of season two, promising to deliver what fans have long been waiting for, and more.
Despite facing criticism over production issues and controversies surrounding poor work conditions, MAPPA, the studio behind the series, managed to deliver a stunning adaptation of Sukuna’s battle against Mahoraga. Now, this epic showdown is set to return to the big screen with never-before-seen footage.
According to an announcement on Jujutsu Kaisen’s official Japanese website, episode #17 of season 2 will undergo revisions and include additional scenes when it’s released on Blu-ray and DVD.
Furthermore, this enhanced version of episode #17, along with episodes 18-20, will be shown in theaters across Japan for a week starting March 29, 2024, coinciding with the Blu-ray and DVD release.
Fans are eagerly anticipating the re-release, especially as it promises to fully capture the intensity of Sukuna and Mahoraga’s clash during the Shibuya Incident. With the added footage, there’s excitement that the episode may offer a fresh perspective, potentially surpassing the original version that aired in 2023.
Even the director, who worked on the episode, has expressed enthusiasm, hinting at a truly remarkable viewing experience.
Jujutsu Kaisen’s Sukuna vs. Mahoraga Showdown, A Redemption Story on Blu-ray
Sukuna’s showdown with Mahoraga in episode #17 undoubtedly stole the spotlight during the Shibuya Arc, leaving fans in awe despite the challenges faced by the studio at the time.
Although somewhat rushed, the fight was still impressively animated, and fans were stunned when animator Roccia Nobili disclosed that only 30% of the original vision made it to the aired version.
Thankfully, fans may finally experience Sukuna vs. Mahoraga in its full intended glory with the upcoming Blu-ray and DVD release. Itsuki Tsuchigami, one of the directors of episode #17, has also shared insights, suggesting that the revised episode will exceed expectations. Tsuchigami even went as far as encouraging fans to get a video player to fully appreciate the episode.
Given the series’ challenges, fans didn’t hold high expectations for the completion of Sukuna’s battle against Mahoraga. Thus, it’s a delightful surprise to learn that the studio opted to refine it for the Blu-ray and DVD release, finally giving the fight the treatment it deserves.
Interestingly, with the increasing popularity of streaming platforms, this move might actually boost sales for the Blu-ray release. Regardless, Jujutsu Kaisen’s most significant and contentious fight is set to make waves once more.
