For the last few weeks, Mappa has been trending on Twitter, and it’s not something to be proud of. Many animators and directors are stepping up against Mappa for the workload, pressure, and underpaid jobs.
While Mappa is known for its beautiful animation, now it is also known for its cheap slavery. While it’s common in every industry that people who work at the back end of any work are not getting less paid for the amount of work they do, Mappa has taken it to a whole new level.
Many animators are speaking up since now they have nothing to lose. This all started when a director of episode 14 of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 tweeted about how little time he was given and that he couldn’t complete the scene properly, which led to the ruined iconic moment.
Yeah, it is the one when Toji enters the domain through Megumi’s opening at the end of the episode. A few days later, his tweet was deleted because of the policies and stuff. However, this gave many animators the courage they needed to speak against Mappa.
One of them was Honehone, who just revealed the deadline given by Mappa to work on Jujutsu Kaisen 0. So, in this article, we will not only talk about the deadline but also why it leads to such a short span of time to work,
Jujutsu Kaisen 0’s Animator Unveils the Shocking Completion Time Given by Mappa
So, on 11th November 2023, @Hone_honeHONE on Twitter (currently X), opened up on the deadline given by Mappa to Work on Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Movie. He mentioned that they were given a span of four months to work on this movie.
Jujutsu Kaisen made over 200 Million dollars at the box office world, and it is said to be made in just four months. It’s insane that such a good animated movie is made in under four months.
I did some good research and found that Jujutsu Kaisen 0 was announced in March 2021. And when something is announced, it means the studio has given the green light to work on the project, which means Mappa was given around 8-9 months to work on the movie.
Now you may think, why did Mappa only give four months to the animators to work on Jujutsu Kaisen when they had about 8-9 months of time? Well, that is because of the greed of Mappa Studio, which wants to become a big studio over time like MadHouse, Ghibli, Toei, Ufotable, etc.
Why did Mappa give only Four Months to Work on Jujutsu Kaisen 0?
As I said, Mappa wants to become a big Studio over time, and that can’t happen with just one or two anime, which means Mappa has to take on many projects to work on.
Mappa specialized in working on popular anime like Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, Hell Paradise, Vinland Saga, Attack on Titan, Pluto, etc. While the studio has worked on some underrated animes, that was before 2020. Since 2020, Mappa has only focused on mainstream animes.
As I said earlier, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 was announced in March 2021, but the studio gave four months to animators to work on it, and I think that is because they had to work on Attack on Titan Final Season Part 2, which was released on January 2022.
While they have multiple teams to work on this animes, they don’t have enough time to work on both. So, I think because they had worked on Attack on Titan, they pushed Jujutsu Kaisen 0 production quickly.
Why are Animators still working for Mappa, even though they have the worst Working schedule?
That’s simple because if they don’t work, someone else will, and working on such big projects will give a boost to their resume, as at the end of the day, every animator has to bring food to their table, and they can’t miss such good opportunities, so they had to work on knowing the tight schedule.
However, I think after this, Mappa will consider how it wants to work in the future with the animators and start giving them enough time to work on projects instead of rushing and overworking.
