What happened in the Joker ending? What happened with the DC villain? These questions have been going unanswered since the release of the 2019 psychological thriller movie Joker. The movie revolves around the infamous DC villain, Joker. Undoubtedly, Joker is one of the most famous villains in the superhero universe. Therefore, fans were eager to get a movie about the psycho clown villain. Thus, the wish came true when the movie was out in theatres on October 4, 2019.
Being based on a superhero comic hero, it featured very little of those unrealistic and superhuman things which we usually witness in any superhero-themed movie. Instead, Joker takes on realistic themes like loneliness, being left out from the rest of society, and exploitation. In this movie, we witness the origin of Joker. The movie didn’t fail the expectations of the fans. It received lots of praises from fans and critics for the directing and acting, especially Joaquin Phoenix’s performance as the titular character Joker. The fans also appreciated the writing and the plot, but the end got many fans confused. Therefore, we will explain the Joker ending in this article.
Why Did Arthur Kill The Three Men?
The plot of the 2019 philosophical thriller revolves around Arthur Flex. He lives in Gotham City with his mother, and also he suffers from a neurological disorder. Because of his problem, he ends up laughing at inappropriate moments. Further, Arthur works as a party clown but aspires to be a famous standup comedian. Flex also wants to appear on the talk show of Murray Franklin, whom Arthur idolizes. Arthur also wants to have a romantic relationship with his neighbor, Sophie Dumond, who is a single mother. Therefore, he invites her to an upcoming standup show of his.
One day at work, some goons attacked Artur. Therefore, his colleague, Randal, gives him a handgun for self-defense. But things go wrong when the gun falls from his clothes while he is visiting a children’s hospital as a clown. Because of this accident and also Randal not accepting that the gun actually belonged to him, Arthur was kicked out of his job. The day got worse for Arthur when he ended up bursting into laughter at some Wayne Enterprises employees who were harassing a girl in a metro. Seeing him laughing, the employees insult and beat him, but Arthur ends up killing two of those men with his gun in self-defense. He further kills the third man while escaping from the metro station.
Later, the owner of Wayne Enterprises, Thomas Wayne, comments on the killing that a poor man killed those rich and successful men just out of jealousy. This statement spread like wildfire throughout Gotham City and infuriated the poor and middle-class people living in this city. Therefore, the commoners and poor people living in Gotham City started a report against the rich and. Later, Arthur goes for his first standup comedy show, which Sophie attends. However, Arthur bursts into laughter and also cannot impress the audience with his jokes.
Soon Arthur finds a secret letter in his mother’s things, in which he finds out that he is the illegitimate son of Thomas Wayne. Knowing this major news, Arthur gets infuriated at his mother for not telling him the truth and then visits the Wayne Manor to meet Thomas. But he fails to meet with Thomas but meets a young Bruce. Eventually, he meets Thomas at a private movie screening, where he asks about the truth. Thomas reveals Penny adopted him and raised Arthur along with her abusive boyfriend. Later, she also went to a mental asylum because of her psychotic behavior.
After knowing the truth, Arthur was distraught and thus, goes to meet Sophie. But seeing Arthur at her doorstep shocks her. Then it was revealed that her interaction with Artur was all his delusions. Later, Arthur visits his mother, Penny, in the hospital, and then he suffocates her with the pillow till death. Then he returns home and gets ready to attend Murray’s show, as his standup show, where he bursts into laughter, goes viral. Before leaving his house, his former colleagues, Randall and Gary, visit him. However, Arthur kills Randall because he got him into the mess and only spares Gary’s life because he was kind to him.
While leaving the house, the investigators were chasing him for the three murders, but he blends in with the protesting crowd who dressed as clowns. Arthur asks Murray to introduce him as Joker because Murray himself mockingly called him Joker in one of his episodes. Later, Arthur tells some ghastly jokes which displease the crowd and then berates Murray for making fun of him on his show. Arthur then reveals him being behind the three murders and also talks about his frustration, how this society looks down on the poor or mentally ill people. When Murray threatens to call the police, Arthur shoots him while they are on air.
After killing Moody on Air, Arthur was arrested by the police. After this event, the rioters go violent, and one of such rioters murders Thomas Wayne and his wife, Martha Wayne, and only leaves Bruce Wayne alive. Meanwhile, while police were taking Arthur, an ambulance driven by the rioters crashed into the police vehicle. The rioters free Arthur, and then he gets out of the car and makes a smile on his face with blood while dancing to the cheers of the rioters.
Later, Arthur was at Arkham Assylum, where he was attending a session with his psychiatrist. But he laughs alone at a joke which he suddenly remembers. Then he escapes the therapy session while leaving a blood trail behind him; there are chances he killed the psychiatrist. The Joker Ending scene signifies that Arthur finally lost his mind and adapted to the darkness in him. This movie beautifully represents that Joker isn’t a born villain but one that society created. This movie shows that the exploitation of the poor and mentally ill people by the rich society that results in these people turning to their darkness.
