Former WWE star John Morrison, known for his high-flying moves and many nicknames, recently shared a story about his debut in WWE. You might be surprised to learn his original ring name was almost something completely different!
Copyright Issue Forced Name Switch
In a recent interview, Morrison revealed WWE wanted him to be called Jonny Blaze. However, there was a problem.
This name is too similar to Marvel’s Ghost Rider character, and rapper Method Man uses a similar name too. Because of copyright concerns, WWE got a warning from both Marvel and Method Man, forcing them to change Morrison’s name.
This led to a scramble for a new name. Morrison went through a few different options before finally settling on Johnny Nitro. He chose this name as a tribute to Eric Bischoff, who was his mentor at the time.
While Morrison would have preferred to keep one name throughout his career, he still has fond memories of his time as Johnny Nitro. He especially liked using the WCW Nitro theme song for his entrances.
Today, Morrison wrestles in AEW under the name Johnny TV. No matter what name he uses, his talent and charisma always shine through.
