Jim Carrey is set to reprise his role as Dr. Robotnik in the upcoming live-action film Sonic the Hedgehog 3, according to a report by Variety. The official Twitter account for the film also released a teaser of the logo, hinting at a character revealed in the post-credits scene of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. This news follows Carrey’s previous announcement in April 2022 that he planned to retire after the last Sonic film.
Variety also reported that Krysten Ritter, Alyla Browne, James Wolk, Sofia Pernas, Cristo Fernández, and Jorma Taccone are joining the cast of the new film, although their roles have not yet been confirmed. Returning cast members include Ben Schwartz, Lee Majdoub, Idris Elba, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Tom Butler, James Marsden, and Tika Sumpter.
The film is scheduled for release on December 20. Additionally, a Knuckles spinoff series, initially set for a 2023 release on Paramount Pictures’ Paramount+ streaming service, has been delayed to 2024.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 made its debut in the United States in April 2022, generating an estimated $26.5 million on its opening day, as reported by Box Office Mojo. The film secured the top spot in 47 markets, including the U.K., France, and Australia. Within its initial three months, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 grossed over $400 million worldwide, and its current global earnings stand at $405,421,518, according to Box Office Mojo.

In April 2022, the film achieved the status of being the highest-grossing video game-based movie in the United States, a record that has since been surpassed by The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
