Jijou wo Shiranai Tenkousei ga Guigui Kuru Episode 1 Recap
It seems that the series begins a few days after Taiyou Takada enrolls in a new grade school. Since there are only 30 students in the entire building, he’s quite happy-go-lucky. On his way to school, he overhears children screaming “BarrierBarrier” and “It’s the Grim Reaper” and runs over to check out. Our series’ second protagonist, Akane Nishimura, is first introduced here.
Akane is now called “Shinigami” by the kids, a harbinger of death or a god of death more so than a Grim Reaper. Instead of calling Akane THE Grim Reaper, in Japanese, they’re referring to her as a Shinigami, rather than THE Grim Reaper. Due to her alleged status as a Shinigami, Takada is fascinated by Akane. Akane waters Morning Glories between classes and Takada asks her why others call her the Grim Reaper, and she says it may be because her eyes remind others of dead fish. She says that she isn’t sure, but it may be because of her eyes.
Takada disagrees with this, saying Shinigami must be a lot of fun. Akane disagrees, saying everybody avoids her. After school, Takada approaches Akane and asks if they want to go home together. The girls heckle Akane from the sidelines about how Takada will get her curse when they see Takada talking to her. To fit in, Akane quietly tells Takada that he probably shouldn’t hang out with her — after all, he might get cursed. Takada says he doesn’t mind getting cursed. Akane concedes.
The boys approach the two just as they begin to leave the school and tell Takada to leave Akane and walk with them instead. They’ll let Takada join their ‘Scorpion Gang’ if he does. Akane is excited when Takada tells her, “See, you’re already making new friends” However, the lead boy quickly shuts that down, stating that he was invited only for Takada.
Because she is used to walking home alone, Akane says it is fine and Takada can go with them. However, Takada doesn’t give in because Akane is a Shinigami, which he thinks is cool. In the end, Takada and Akane do walk home together that day, Takada holding Akane’s hand nearly the entire way. When Akane asks Takada why he does this, he says it is for the curse to come directly to him, and perhaps for Shinigami Powers.
Akane sits in front of Takada in class the following day and immediately begins talking to her. He asks why everyone shouts “Barrier” at her and puts their hands up — and Akane says it’s so they don’t get her curse. Takada laments that he wishes he could use barriers, but that he wouldn’t use one against Akane. Assuming they are friends, Takada asks Akane, “Why would I use one against you?”
In fear of rumors spreading about the couple, Akane goes to deliver a handout to Takada, but she does not want to be seen. After bumping into her, Hano walks into Takada’s room and offers him a snack. As Akanose sits in the hallway, disappointed in herself, she believes Hano beat her to Takada.
In the hallway, Takada appears and asks Akane why on earth she didn’t visit him, as he was waiting for her, and she notes that she didn’t talk much today. That was normal for her before she met Takada, but now it makes her sad. In response to her explanation, Takada says that he doesn’t mind if rumors spread about them. Akane says she doesn’t either. After sitting in the nurse’s office for a bit, the two drink water from a water cooler and watch the sunset together. Akene notes that the water tastes very good.
