The heartbreaking incident when Jayalalithaa lost her beloved MGR!
So, if you are an admirer of Jayalalithaa, then you must be aware of the time when she was standing like a hollow body close to the corpse of MGR (Maruthur Gopala Ramachandran). She seemed to be in a shock. Moreover, not a single drop of tear was found rolling inside her eyes. That scene was captured by many media personalities and is still remembered whenever we talk about her. But many might not be knowing the deep underlying story wrapped in it!
In 1987 when MGR was taking his last breath, his family members did not allow Jayalalithaa to meet him. Following which Jayalalithaa had even written a letter to the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. In which she mentioned her desire to meet MGR. But she was unable to fulfill this wish. Moreover, when Jayalalithaa got to know about MGR’s death, she was restless. And when she arrived at MGR’s house, his family members had again blocked her from entering. But now, she had no other choice than to wait. She was continuously knocking on the door. And then finally someone had thought of opening the door. But no one told her that where they had kept MGR’s corpse. As a result of which restless and broken Jayalalithaa tried to search the body of her beloved person in almost every room.
But then she was given the news that MGR’s body was taken to “Rajaji Hall” from the back door. Following this heartbreaking news, she anyhow tried to reach over there. And fortunately, she succeeded! Shockingly, she was standing close to his corpse in the same manner for almost 21 hours in two days. But doing so was also not easy for her. Some supporters of MGR’s wife-“Janaki Ramachandran,” were constantly crushing Jayalalithaa’s feet and were also pricking nails on her. But all these were unable to hurt the soul, which was already broken.
And things were not limited to this. When MGR’s body was taken in the Hearse, Jayalalithaa was running behind it. Seeing her instability, one of the officials lent her hand to pull her on the Hearse. But then the nephew of MGR’s wife pushed her. As a result of which she had fallen on the ground. After that, she had no other option than to return. But what was the relationship between Jayalalithaa and MGR (Maruthur Gopala Ramachandran)? Let us find out!
Jayalalithaa had a rumored affair with M. G. Ramachandran. He was her mentor who had shown her path in both the acting as well as the political world. However, many a time, Jayalalithaa claimed that she was a self-made woman and nobody else was behind her success story. And now, let us try to understand the relationship or can say Jayalalitha’s alleged love affair with MGR.
So, MGR was a megastar of Tamil films. And Jayalalithaa’s path collided when him when just in her second film, she got to play her part beside MGR. And it is said that from the very start, MGR was attracted towards her, and so he always had a soft corner for Jayalalithaa. One of the main reasons for his attraction towards Jayalalithaa was her personality and her ability to speak English fluently. Moreover, in between her shooting schedules, she also liked to read English novels. All these things made her different from other actresses.
Together, they both had gifted us with 28 hit films which did a marvelous job at the box office. MGR was never able to watch Jayalalithaa in pain. Once Jayalalithaa herself had narrated an incident which proves the before lines. It was the time when they both were shooting in the Thar desert of Rajasthan for Adimaippenn. And the sand was too hot to bear for Jayalalithaa as she was made to walk barefoot for a scene. She was about to collapse, but MGR had sensed her pain and discomfort. As a result of which he had lifted her and ordered the team to pack up.
Their admirer always saw them as more than just friends. Moreover, it is also said that many a time on the set, MGR had also waited for hours to meet her. He also wanted Jaya to accompany him wherever he went. With every next heartbeat, their bond was solidifying even more. And then, finally, Jayalalithaa grabbed the courage to propose MGR. But unfortunately, MGR had put down the proposal. Most probably because he was already married, and also their contrasting 31 years age gap might be a reason.
Political Journey of Jayaram Jayalalithaa and M. G. Ramachandran
Four years after when MGR became the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in 1977, he had also asked Jayalalithaa to join his party “All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam”. Which he had formed after splitting from Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. He told Jayalalithaa that if she would give her love to the public, the public would definitely return her love. Following his suggestion, she left the world of glamor and entered into politics.
And then, it was her potential that had helped her to enjoy the taste of success. However, many thought that it was the result of the relationship which she had with MGR, who had already made his mind to make Jaya his political heir. And this led to the rise of several rivals in their party itself. Following which, they tried to create trouble between them. Jayalalithaa and MGR were also estranged for several years. It is also said that when MGR returned from the United States after a kidney transplant, Jayalalithaa had gone to receive him at the airport. But some political leaders had made her get locked in the VIP lounge.
In her political career, the first time when she was made the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu was in 1991. This was the time when she was re-elected to the assembly. Before this, her party had grabbed a collation victory. But It is said that it was the result of the sympathy which they got following the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, the leader of the Indian National Congress, with whom Jayalalithaa had an alliance. It had a massive impact because the assassination took place just before the elections.
Jayalalithaa was the state’s youngest chief minister. Moreover, she was the first woman to serve a full term. It was from 24th June 1991 to 12th May 1996. But she didn’t stop here. Her various schemes had served as the backbone to woman empowerment. Under Jayalalithaa’s lead, both their party as well as the state had seen its glorious time. Following which she got the title of “Amma!” which means mother. Her supporters still worship her as their godmother.
So, after leaving acting, during her later political career, too, she had achieved great heights. But unfortunately, her mentor was unable to witness all that. Her policies had helped her to reserve a special place in the hearts of her people. And as a result of that, Jayalalithaa had six times given her service as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. So, this was the journey of Jayalalithaa from being called Ammu by her loved ones to the Amma of Tamil Nadu. But what about her love life? Did she ever get married? Well, apart from this famous affair of Jayalalithaa’s, there were some more rumors which paved the way at that time. Which also claimed that she had once tied the knots. But with whom? Is there any depth in all these rumors? Let us find out!
So, apart from MGR, if any other person with whom Jayalalithaa was ever rumored was Shobhan Babu. His original name was Uppu Sobhana Chalapathi Rao. It is said that the very first time when the two have met was at a filmy party in Chennai. And she was head over heels in the very first meeting itself. Very soon, the two of them got bonded in a healthy friendship. At that time, Shobhan Babu was already a married man blessed with children. Several times media personalities had found them hanging together at several parties and functions. It is also said that once media personalities had found Jayalalithaa trying to get a glimpse of Shobhan Babu through a binocular.
Everything was going smoothly until Jayalalithaa took the big step of asking Shobhan Babu for marriage, which he had clearly denied stating that he could not leave his wife and children for this marriage. However, the whole entertainment world was shocked when Chandani, one of the childhood friends of Jayalalithaa, had revealed an unbelievable thing in front of the media. She said that Jayalalithaa had shown her pictures from her marriage with Sobhan Babu. But neither Jayalalithaa nor Shobhan Babu had ever given any clarification regarding this.
Following which rumors were circulating which claimed that they both were about to get married, but it was called off at the last moment. And exactly like a film, it is said that MGR had the back of that eleventh-hour decision.
One interesting thing to be noted here is that the first film in which Jayalalithaa had starred opposite Shobhan Babu was the time when she was about to leave the film industry. And the title of that film was “Doctor Babu.” And this was the only film in which they had worked together.
Jayalalithaa never got married and had any children. However, she adopted Sasikala’s nephew Sudhakaran in 1995. Sasikala was very close to Jayalalithaa. But the very next year in 1996, Jayalalithaa had disowned Sudhakaran.
After Jayalalithaa was elected as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for the sixth time, she got severely ill in the September of that year. Following which she was hospitalized for a total of seventy-five days. And it was on 5th December 2016 when she took her last breath. She gave her life backing to cardiac arrest. Similar to MGR, she also died in office. Throughout her lifetime, she was always willing to be by the side of her mentor M. G. Ramachandran. However, because of several unknown reasons, many a time they had separated their paths.
But it was only after her death, that she was able to complete her age-old longing of staying beside MGR. The dead body of Jayalalithaa was also first kept at the same “Rajaji Hall” where MGR’s corpse was kept. And then Jayalalithaa’s body was buried beside the place where MGR’s body was buried, on the Marina beach in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, which is now MGR and Jayalalithaa Memorial Complex! Recently, a biopic of Puratchi Thalaivi Amma- Jayaram Jayalalithaa was released on 10th September 2021. The title of the film is Thalaivi.
