Jarhead, released in 2005, seems to be a war film, but it is not. The marines in the war drama film only move around, and actual battle does not occur. Directed by Sam Mendes, the film is based on Anthony Swofford’s memoir, which has the same name.
The recruits and the background characters in the film die in avoidable accidents. However, produced by Lucy Fisher and Douglas Wick, Jarhead is an underrated war movie that does not fit into the typical war movie genre and provides an accurate depiction of war.
Jake Gyllenhaal (as Anthony Swofford) had no greed for the camera’s attention and allowed other actors to be on the screen for a long period in the film. Made with a budget of $72 million, the film grossed $97.1 million.
The film shows what it is like to be a soldier in Iraq as it is more polished than any other related documentary. Three sequels, which are fictional and have no relation to this film, got released later.

Jarhead Plot
Anthony “Swoff” Swofford’s father served in the Vietnam War in 1989. Thus, he gets influenced and joins the United States Marine Corps training. He struggles there, but Staff Sergeant Sykes identifies his potential and advises him to join the Scout Sniper course.
Accordingly, Anthony goes through intensive training, becomes a sniper, and gets recruited to the Arabian Peninsula during the Gulf War, where fights hardly occur. Thus, they somehow pass their time, and Anthony gets suspicious of his girlfriend’s affair.
Dettman finds an adult video of his wife with her neighbor to take revenge because he had cheated on her. Some field reporters appear on the peninsula. Thus, Skyes forces his unit to play football.
The marines mimic adult acts as the game elopes, and Skyes feels shameful. Thus, he removes the reporters and orders the marines to relocate heavy sandbags on a rainy night. He gets demoted to Private (E-1) from Lance Corporal (E-3) when his unit’s member accidentally sets a crate of flares and a tent on fire.
It is how Anthony suffers from a mental breakdown due to isolation, suspicion (of his girlfriend for cheating), boredom, and punishments. After a long Operation Desert Storm, the Marines go to the Saudi-Kuwaiti border.
Again, marines face an accidental attack from friendly forces but no enemies. The Highway of Death, which got bombed, introduces the marines to burnt vehicles and remains of burnt dead bodies.
Later, Skyes shows the Marines a safer place to protect themselves from the rain of crude oil and burning wells set on fire by the retreating Iraqis. Anthony gets angry after learning that Fowler damaged an Iraqi corpse. However, he buries it in another place.
Jarhead Ending Explained
Troy, Anthony’s spotter, and Anthony finally go to combat to kill two Iraqi officers assumed to be in a control tower. Meanwhile, another team appears on the same mission with an airstrike. Troy, who does not get allowed by his senior officer to shoot, gets upset.
The damaged airport that contains the control tower gets bombed by US Warplanes. Thus, Troy and Anthony decide to return to their base camp. However, they get lost at night and are scared after hearing the cries.
After going ahead, Troy and Anthony find the marine base camp where the Marines celebrate the completion of the war. Meanwhile, Anthony expresses his disappointment over not firing any bullet till now before Troy. So, Troy asks him to use the opportunity.
Other marines and Anthony fire bullets amid the bonfire. The troops celebrate victory on the way home and get disturbed by a Vietnam War veteran getting into their bus. The Marines part ways, and Anthony’s suspicion turns out to be true after returning home.
Anthony finds his girlfriend with another guy in a bar. Meanwhile, Skyes returns to serve as the Master Sergeant in the Iraq War, Kruger lives a corporate life, Cortez focuses on his family life, and Escobar works in a supermarket. Sadly, Anthony hears about Troy’s death from Fergus. The Marines meet at his funeral and recollect their memories.
