IVE is back with their third EP, IVE EMPATHY, taking their artistry to new heights. Released on February 3, the six-track album marks a shift in the group’s thematic focus, expanding from self-love to a broader message of empathy. Known for their powerful presence in the K-pop industry, IVE continues to solidify their musical identity.
This latest project serves as both a reflection of their journey and an evolution in storytelling. With dual title tracks—ATTITUDE and REBEL HEART—the album blends nostalgic elements with modern production, creating a fresh yet familiar sound. As IVE moves forward in their career, IVE EMPATHY proves they are more than just a chart-topping group; they are artists redefining their space in music.
A Shift in Theme and Sound
During a press conference in Seoul, Wonyoung emphasized the group’s new direction, explaining that IVE EMPATHY focuses on empathy and human connection. The album builds upon the group’s previous themes of self-love but extends its message to resonate across generations. The six tracks display IVE’s evolving artistry, pushing their vocal and instrumental versatility to new levels.
The album’s two lead singles serve as the foundation of this transformation. REBEL HEART takes a percussive-heavy approach, layering dynamic vocals over upbeat drum patterns to create a sense of unity. Meanwhile, ATTITUDE cleverly samples Suzanne Vega’s Tom’s Diner, pairing it with a pulsing bassline and shimmering synths to convey a message of resilience and personal strength.
Each track on IVE EMPATHY offers something unique. FLU is a pop-dance anthem with an infectious chorus, while You Wanna Cry reinvents Whitney Houston’s I Wanna Dance with Somebody with a fresh acoustic-pop twist. Featuring lyrics by Exy of WJSN, the track merges nostalgia with youthful energy, further highlighting the group’s versatility.
Adding to the album’s depth, Thank U brings a groovy R&B vibe, featuring a smooth bassline and percussive guitar elements. Liz contributed to the songwriting, marking a personal milestone in her artistic growth. Meanwhile, the closing track, TKO, leans into hip-hop, blending tight drum sequencing with pulsing 808 bass, allowing the group to a more mature vocal style.
Since its release, IVE EMPATHY has taken the charts by storm. REBEL HEART secured No. 1 on iTunes K-pop Top Songs in 16 regions, while the album has been trending across YouTube in 13 countries. IVE’s growing influence is undeniable, with the group headlining major festivals like Lollapalooza Chicago and Summer Sonic Japan, proving their global dominance.
