Overlord is a series growing in popularity that started off as a light novel series written by Kugabe Maruyama back on May 9, 2010 and has published 12 volumes since March 30, 2012. Later, the story was adapted into a light novel on July 30, 2012, by Kugane Maruyama.
The idea of this intriguing story prompted a manga adaptation by Satoshi Oshio featuring the art of Hugin Miyama, which was then serialized by Kadokawa Shoten’s manga magazine, which started on November 26, 2014.
With its growing popularity, a 13-episode series was planned for the studio Madhouse and was released during the summer anime season of July 7, 2015. It was a year filled with amazing shows like Yuri Kuma Arashi, Gates Maria: the Virgin Witch, Death Parade, and, of course, One Punch Man.
Even with all these amazing titles holding their place in popular mainstream media, Overlord still held its own as a well-known and highly praised franchise. Since the anime started in 2015, as of November 2023, it has over five seasons. So, it made many fans wonder if the Overlord anime has ended or not.
And, if you are also wondering the same thing, then you don’t have to worry because, in this article, we will answer in detail whether Overlord anime has ended or not. But before knowing the answer, let’s catch a short recap on how the story of Ainz Ooal Gown started.
Plot
It’s the year 2126, and an immersive D-MMORPG is known as Yggdrash II. This game, which allows you to completely immerse yourself in its world, is shutting down after 12 years of service.
A highly skilled guild master named Ainz Ooal Gown stays in the game as long as he can before the game shuts down at midnight and is saddened to see that he is the only one from his guild to be there during his final hours.
While the clock strikes midnight and the game is over, somehow Mamoga is still in the game. He thinks the system shutdown is taken at the sweet time, only to realize that his loyal NPC staff members are more interactive than usual. They can express more emotions, and he can actually touch them.
He then realizes that he can’t pull out of the game menu and can’t find anywhere to log out, so there can only be one conclusion. Mamoga is now living in the world. Mamoga starts to investigate and prepare. First off, he investigates his staff and see if they can still function like they did in the game with some modifications.
He then checks his powers to see if anything adjusted from the transition while learning he could still communicate from anywhere using the same technique from the game.
Once he has a full grasp of the situation and how to be in control, he then decides to investigate the new world in case there could be any threats against him or even if there may be another player like him stuck in this world as well.
Is Overlord Anime Finished?
Overlord anime hasn’t yet been finished. Even though four seasons of the anime have already been released, there are still a lot of stories ahead of it—the last episode of season 4, episode 13, covered volume 14.
However, season four only covered volumes 10, 11, and 14 and skipped 12 and 13, which will be covered in Overlord’s third movie, Overlord: The Holy Kingdom, which is expected to hit the theater in 2024.
Until now, there has not been any news related to Season Five of Overlord, but we can expect an announcement for it when Overlord: The Holy Kingdom is released. So, if you are still curious to know about the story ahead of season 4 and can’t wait for season 5, you can continue reading its light novel from volume 15.
Note that Overlord manga is behind its name since the anime is adapting from its light novel. But if haven’t ever read a light novel before, I suggest you not read it since it will ruin your experience and the love you that you have for the series.
