Oscar Pistorius: What’s The Story of His Crime?

As per the court documents, Pistorius was convicted for murdering his model girlfriend Steenkamp in the year 2013. The irony was that the murder took place on Valentine’s Day. She was shot and killed in his Pretoria house.

In the court, he admitted that he took the action in self-defense as he mistook her for an intruder. Just the next day, i.e., on 15the February 2013, he was taken into police custody and was formally charged with murder in a Pretoria court.

Narrating the whole incident from his point of view, he submitted an affidavit to the court. He explained in para 16.4 that on 13 February 2013, around 22h00, they both were in his bedroom. She was doing her yoga exercise, and he was watching television in his bedroom. He also mentioned that his prosthetic legs were off.

In para 16.5, he said that both of them fell asleep after she completed her exercise routine. He woke up early the next day, i.e., on 14 Feb 2013, went to the balcony to bring the fan in and closed the sliding doors, the blinds, and the curtains on his way back, he said in para 16.7.

He further explained in the same para that he heard noises from the bathroom and realized that someone was inside. In para 16.9, he said that he believed some intruder has broken into the house, and he was scared to even switch on the lights. In the next part, i.e., in 16.10, he mentioned that he took out his 9mm pistol and made his way to the bathroom shouting warnings to the intruder to get him out of the house. He also said that he asked Steenkamp to call the police, and due to the unavailability of any light, he thought that she was in the bed.

In para 16.11, he said that he realized that the intruder was in the toilet as the door was closed (the toilet is inside the bathroom and has a separate door) after noticing that the bathroom window was open. He heard some movements inside the toilet but didn’t see anyone. In the next part, he expressed how horrified he was when the realization hit him; and he considered that the intrude entered through the unprotected window. The absence of his prosthetic leg made him vulnerable; and he was afraid as his bedroom door was locked and his mobility was limited.

In the next paras, he explained how he fired shots at the toilet door and shouted for Reeva to call for police. The lack of response from her dawned upon him, and when he checked the bed, he didn’t find her there. The realization hit him, and then he screamed for help.

Pistorius was questioned for five days about his version of the story.
