AMC+’s original crime series Kin follows a Dublin family caught up in a gang war. Family bonds are tested when the Kinsella family is drawn into a dark world of crime, betrayal, and greed.
Ciaran Donnelly and Peter McKenna clung together to tell this fascinating and engaging story about characters who are inherently human and gray.
Prior to the series premiere, several news outlets stated the series was inspired by the Kinahan gang and the Hutch–Kinahan feud and noted similarities to former RTE staple Love/Hate.
A show, “Insider,” stated that “This is not the Kinahans’ story. However, people can draw their own judgments. Viewers will be able to make up their own mind about it.”
Is Kin a True Story?
No, “Kin” is not acted based on a true story. The story and screenplay are by creators Ciaran Donnelly and Peter McKenna. However, the complex and intertwined story provides viewers with an accurate insight into Irish culture and society.
What’s impressive is the story’s uncompromising Irish roots, which the developers paid homage to when creating the show. The cast and crew were also predominantly Irish, creating a sense of community seamlessly as creative voices came together to showcase the uniquely Irish culture.
The show thus takes shape as a tense family drama that is emotionally taxing and compelling. Charlie Cox explained in an interview: “It’s really about family and interesting family dynamics and what happens to very strong bonds when a family faces the greatest adversity they’ve ever faced.
How will these characters react to this? And what do they need to do to overcome the fragmented nature of these problems?” He even stated that it was this inherent honesty in the script that drew him to the project.

Last night’s emotional finale to Kin saw Eamonn Cunningham, Ireland’s most powerful mafia boss, shot dead by his nemesis Frank Kinsella after an overdose. Who will take over the drug empire now that the two heads, played by Ciaran Hinds as Eamonn and Aidan Gillen as Frank, are gone?
Kin Filming Locations
Kin was shot entirely in Ireland, specifically in Dublin. Filming for Season 1 wrapped in the last week of February 2021, in reference to an Instagram post from series co-star Claire Dunn.
The stories in this series revolve around a respected aristocratic family that falls into the bad underworld of the city of Dublin. As the series is made in Dublin, the makers decided to shoot the series in the city with local crew and cast.
During filming, the actors got to know each other better and bonded as a family. When Scanlan arrived in Dublin to begin filming, he did not know much about the location, so he contacted Claire Dunn. They talked about their lives and families and gradually became closer.
There were several emotional scenes between their characters, and they synchronized their energies with each other during production. This also applies to other members of the ensemble cast and technicians.
So, you can be sure that this story, although obviously fictional, is made completely believable by the effortless amalgamation of all the endearing elements of the drama.
