The two had signs of healthy rivalry when Eruki was first introduced in the series; he was an outcast. Not in a bad way, but the type that doesn’t abide by the rules of the society.
Eruki is a genius who is too high on himself and what he can do while ignoring everyone else’s sense of reason. He thought bomb-type magic would be one of the best things that he could offer to the world.
However, when Shione learned of this, he didn’t want the genius mage to go down that route, as it could harm many.
But Eruki refused to acknowledge him and said he would only listen to him if they were equals. Shione agreed to this and challenged him to an official match of counting to show which one was better in the practical aspect of magic. Eruki has some respect for the protagonist, so he accepts the offer and even looks forward to it.
Infinite Mage Chapter 47 Recap
Infinite Mage Chapter 47 showed the final moments of Eruki’s and Shione’s match, the results of which were surprising. So far, we have seen Shione winning the fight by not his skills but his wit or luck on his side.
However, this time was different, and he put everything on the line for this to make his thoughts reach Eruki.
Eruki had to admit that Shione was as insane as him to go through that much trouble just to put forward his POV. However, it was a matter of pride for Eruki, so he gave it his all to defeat Shione.
The score difference started to change in his pretty quickly, so quickly that others were sure that Shione would lose.
Shione had also started to realize that he would not win this round, and the defeat would mean he would have to start over again. However, he realized that he hadn’t pushed himself to the limit and broke his limits. It was a bit of a feelings triumph logic and win by sheer willpower, a little awkward in this series.

Infinite Mage Chapter 48 will show what Eruki meant by saying taking responsibility for Shione after the match. There is going to be one character in there who is a Fujoshi and will take this the wrong way.
Few people will notice it due to Eruki’s serious commitment he will give to Shione for the things to come. Eruki has experienced a great fight with Shione.
He now sees him eye-to-eye, so he can tell him things he otherwise couldn’t. Shione won’t know how to process it because, as far as he goes, he will get the gist of it.
And the two will finally have a bro-level understanding of each other’s motives and aspirations. This will be nice to see since there is not a single important male character in the series at this point who is friends with Shione.
