The Yin Yang Master: Dream of Eternity is based on a series of novels named Onmyōji, written by Baku Yumemakura (since 1986). It showcases Qing Ming, the Yin Yang Master, who vows to fulfill his master’s last wish and goes to the Imperial City to battle with the serpent who had to awaken from its slumber. It is a story of the magic that fills the murder mystery with suspense and fantasy along with a hint of melodrama.
The film created a stir all over the internet because of its name. The Yin Yang Master: Dream of Eternity is based on a novel, whereas, another movie of a similar title hit the internet, which was an adaptation of a mobile game, based on Onmyōji.
The plot of Yin Yang Master: Dream of Eternity
The story begins with an event that happened centuries ago. A serpent demon took birth from the desires of men. To capture the demon, four masters gathered together. They trapped the snake within the body of the Empress, in the Imperial City, who was protected by the four stone guardians.
Whenever the demon tried to wake up, the stone guardians came together. The story focuses on one such event, where the four masters- Hongrou, Longye (Jessie Li), Bo Ya (Deng Lun), and Qing Ming (Mark Chao)- traveled to the Imperial City, to awaken the stone guardians. The story takes a drastic turn when Qing Ming’s Master Hongruo was killed in his sleep. There came a profound demand for investigation within the court. Later, a failed attempt of assassination of the Empress created turmoil in the realm. The masters suspected each other and decided to investigate individually.
Master Longye is accused to be the assassinator and before she is able to disclose the truth she discovered, she becomes prey of the Hair Demon, who was the actual culprit. Although, in the final moments she explains the truth to Qing Ming he misinterprets it. He along with Bo Ya, accuses Shouyue (Wang Duo).
After this revelation, while comforting the Princess, Qing Ming hunts the Hair Demon, who tried to attack her. The latter reveals the motive behind the attack and we discover that the Princess is the actual Empress.
