Is It Worth Watching?
Being the highest-rated crime drama show with a rating of 9.2, it is one of the best shows ever created. Despite the enormous toll that playing Tony Soprano had on the actor, it was James Gandolfini’s most cherished role. Even though Gandolfini is equally well-known for his portrayal of Virgil in the movie True Romance, his fans seemed to identify more with his part as the tortured mob boss. Gandolfini’s portrayal was so powerful because he devoted every fiber of his being to it and was able to draw from his troubling background.
Because Gandolfini had to use his unresolved emotional traumas to accurately portray Tony Soprano’s emotions, the role was tough for those close to him to witness. Although there is no doubt that James Gandolfini was the show’s star, every great actor needs an equally excellent co-star, such as Edie Falco.
Falco portrayed Carmela Soprano, the posh and sophisticated wife of a mobster who had strong emotions all the time. Few females can cry as convincingly and heartbreakingly as Falco, who had numerous opportunities to do so over The Sopranos’ nearly ten-year run.
Falco, though, attributes a lot of her performance to how she and Gandolfini interacted off-camera. The Sopranos changed television history in many ways, but one of the major effects was how violent a criminal drama could be.
The brutal killing sequences in this drama, which stays loyal to the mobster concept, leave its viewers with lasting memories. The first four episodes of The Sopranos, despite their reputation for using gory imagery, are rather subdued and merely discuss the need to “whack” informants, loose cannons, and anybody else who got in the way of the gang’s business.
In the fifth episode of the first season, viewers finally get to see Tony Soprano kill someone. The Don learns that Febby Petruilo has turned on the family and turned state’s witness when Soprano is out with his oldest kid Meadow looking at potential colleges for her to attend.
After tracking Petrulio down, Soprano uses a wire to choke him, severing his throat and causing him to bleed. First time seeing Tony Soprano carry out his dirty work rather than delegating it to someone else. In The Sopranos, characters other than Tony Soprano also participate in violent crimes.
