Netflix’s Dead To Me is a dark comedy with Linda Cardellini and Christina Applegate in the lead roles. The story is about two women who meet by chance and whose lives start to turn out the same way.
Dead to Me ran for three great seasons full of mysteries, intrigues, deceits, tragedies, and funny moments. But even more so because of how well Christina Applegate —who went from being Kelly Bundy— and Linda Cardellini —whose role in ER was amazing— work together. So, is this series worth your time? I’m going to give you my honest opinion and let you be the judge.
What Is Dead To Me About?
At the beginning of the story, Jen’s husband is killed in a hit-and-run. Judy also loses someone close to her, but she deals with it in a very different way. The first one ends up as a crazy widow, while the second one is happy and carefree. Even though they were very different, they got along. But the story isn’t as simple as it seems. This show is one of a kind because it has a lot of twists, turns, and jokes, and the actors are great.
How Many Seasons Are There Of Dead To Me?
Dead To Me ran on Netflix for a course of three seasons, each consisting of ten episodes. The debut season landed on that platform back on 3 May 2019. The sophomore season landed on Netflix on May 8, 2020, and the final third season landed on Netflix back in 17 November 2022.
Plot Evolution
All three seasons delve —each in their own accretions— deeper into the complexities of grief, laughs, friendship, and forgiveness.
With the show’s signature blend of —utterly— dark humor and drama, we witness the ripple effects of Jen’s (played by the lovely Christina Applegate) and Judy’s (played by Linda Cardellini) actions as they continue to navigate the consequences of their decisions concerning their methods to cope with loss through different kinds of ways.
In my opinion, the third season was slow because the focus shifted from the immediate aftermath of Steve’s (James Marsden) death to the slow unraveling of Jen and Judy’s own emotional turmoil.
The season skillfully deals with unresolved mysteries while introducing new challenges, seamlessly blending newer storylines with past events.
Is Dead To Me Worth Watching?
The story arc and character development of Jen and Judy are well scripted and explored —kudos to the scriptwriters that wish to put strong female leads. Their portrayals are one of shining a spotlight on their emotional growth.
Jen’s character shows immense growth in her ability to trust and bond with others, while Judy discovers her own strength and learns to face her fears and past traumas.
That being said, I’d say that, for the most part, highlighting the relationship between the two women and how it evolves throughout the season is the meat in the bone here.
The evolution of their friendship, from a shaky bond formed by mutual grief to a deep understanding of each other’s struggle, is the bedrock of the show. Through trials and tribulations, ups and downs, fights, laughs, and tears, the two —Jen and Judy— grow together and learn from each other, leaving the audience rooting for their newfound sisterhood.
If that’s your brand of vodka, be my guest, I expected a little bit more. Then again, I’m demanding when it comes to stories, and to each his or her own.
Does New Storylines Really Matter?
Season 3 introduces several new characters and storylines that significantly impact the twists and turns of the plot.
Without revealing any spoilers, the return of a character from the past deepens the intrigue, while new faces in the women’s lives provide unique challenges and further the narrative.
Each new storyline plays a pivotal role in shaping the season, enhancing the show’s overall arc, and keeping viewers glued to their screens.
Refreshing Performances
Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini are great actressesm and in this story they continue to give powerhouse performances, showcasing their ability to portray multifaceted characters with depth and emotional resonance, we’ve seen Linda in ER as a single mom nurse, or Christina as the slutty comedic character in Married With Children, now, they’re grown mature women willing to give more, and this proves it to a T.
Their chemistry is palpable and integral to the show’s success, making the audience invest in their overall journey. The supporting actors also deliver strong performances, further enriching the compelling narrative.

Writing and Direction
The writing and direction of Season 3 remain top-notch, striking the essential balance between humor and heartbreak as the season builds to its climax; the pace and tone of the show never waver, sustaining suspense while simultaneously allowing room for tender moments. The writing team has done a commendable job of bridging continuity with new developments, making Season 3 a fitting addition to the overall series.
In its third and final season, “Dead to Me” exceeds expectations, combining exceptional writing, acting, and direction to create an unforgettable viewing experience. Fans will undoubtedly be saddened to bid farewell to these fascinating characters and their gripping stories, but this season serves as a worthy and satisfying culmination of their journey.
