U.S. House Democrats have initiated an investigation into SpaceX following allegations that Russia may be utilizing Starlink satellite internet service in its ongoing conflict with Ukraine.
Representatives Jamie Raskin and Robert Garcia expressed concern in a letter to SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell, citing Ukrainian intelligence reports claiming Russian military forces are using Starlink terminals in eastern Ukraine, potentially violating U.S. sanctions.
The Democrats emphasized the seriousness of the situation, highlighting the potential threat to Ukraine’s security, lives, and U.S. national security. While the Kremlin has denied allegations of utilizing Starlink, the lawmakers urged SpaceX to address the issue promptly.
Starlink terminals, known for providing high-speed internet, were deployed in Ukraine following Russia’s invasion in February 2022, proving crucial for battlefield communications.
Ukrainian officials have accused Russia of obtaining terminals from Arab countries and deploying them in areas under its control in Ukraine. Kyiv has appealed to SpaceX to prevent the terminals’ use in occupied territories.
Despite Starlink’s denial of involvement with the Russian government or military, Democratic lawmakers remain vigilant. SpaceX has yet to respond to the letter, initially reported by The Washington Post.
The investigation coincides with Western efforts to support Ukraine with arms and financing following Russia’s resurgence on the battlefield.
While Ukraine seeks aid, a critical U.S. assistance package remains stalled in Congress, partly due to opposition from Republicans, including former President Donald Trump, who has expressed admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Democratic President Joe Biden is expected to renew his request for a $95 billion aid package for Ukraine’s weaponry during his State of the Union speech. The Democrats’ inquiry into SpaceX’s role is set to elicit a response by March 20.
