The beautiful romance drama film Honeysuckle Rose, which came out in 1980, has completed over forty years of being a moderately entertaining story. Inspired by the 1936 Swedish movie Intermezzo, the movie got Amy Irving the Worst Supporting Actress award at the Golden Raspberry Awards. So, let us rewind a little and look at all of the filming locations of this movie.
Under the direction of Jerry Schatzberg and with the screenplay written by John Binder, Carol Sobieski, and William D. Wittliff, Honeysuckle Rose follows the story of a country singer and his affairs outside of his marriage. The Swedish version of the film was made by Gustaf Molander and Gosta Stevens.
The makers cast actor Willie Nelson for the role of Buck Bonham, a struggling country singer with a family that loves him, a beautiful wife, and a great son. Actress Dyan Cannon was cast in the role of Viv Bonham, wife of Buck. Amy Irving played the role of Lily Ramsey, the daughter of the guitarist of Buck’s band, who ended up joining the band.
Apart from our main characters, the movie also has Slim Pickens, Charles Levin, Mickey Rooney Jr., Lane Smith, Pepe Serna, Priscilla Pointer, and many others as the supporting cast. The movie failed to be the sensation or the next big romance movie that its makers probably wanted it to become.
With its predictable storyline and cliched characters, the plot lacked depth and thought, and this fact remains painfully obvious throughout the movie even now. It feels unnecessarily stretched with a story that could have been wrapped in less than an hour.
Ignoring the movie’s inability to impress the audience and critics, along with its mediocre success, let us take a moment to visit all of the locations where this movie was filmed.
Honeysuckle Rose Filming Locations
Probably the only thing the movie managed to do well was scouting for locations. Whoever was in charge knew what they were doing because the backdrop for the film was one of the only memorable things about it.
Texas, United States of America
Most of the scenic shots that you see in the movie, the ones that make you want to be a part of the movie as well, were shots taken in Texas state. A heavy portion of the movie was actually shot in the state, with a heavy focus on Austin, Texas.
With the entire movie shot only in Austin, fans were able to point out certain popular locations from the movie. The Padre Island National Seashore in Texas was one location that the makers visited way too many times for filming purposes.
The North Cross Mall also features in the film quite a few times, specifically the ice skating rink, which no longer exists as a part of the mall. Congress Avenue was another famous location used heavily in the film. A popular scene from the film, which many may remember as the Bonham family reunion scene, was filmed at the Fischer Dance Hall, also situated in Texas.
The filming for the entire film took place in Austin city in the state of Texas for an extended period of almost a year, or a little bit more. Considering the film is so old, not a lot of locations used in it are all that recognizable in the present time in Austin.
But props have to be given to the director of the film, Jerry Schatzberg, for using the locations in a way that brought out their full potential, making the scenes as romantic as they did.
