What is “Hometown” about?
Hometown follows the story of three individuals linked to one mysterious and isolated village in South Korea called Saju, set in 1999. The police of the village recovered a recording tape which contained a recording of serial murders however nothing is visible except a weird noise coming from the background.
Detective Choi Hyung then investigates a case from 1989, when a terrorist, Jo Kyung Ho, returned from Japan to South Korea after completing his studies. However, his comeback brings misery to the village. Kyung Ho intentionally sets off a methane bomb in the train station, which results in the death of almost all the passengers present there.
Surprisingly, Kyung Ho himself surrendered to the police and was sent to prison for a lifetime. His only daughter, Jo Jae Young, was sent to her sister, Jo Jung Hyun, to look after her. Detective Choi Hyung finds that Jo Jae Young is somehow related to the recording tape.
The story moves back to 1999 when another murder case takes place in the village, and in charge of the case was Detective Choi Hyung. As Choi Hyung investigates the murders, he finds it somehow connected to how his wife was killed in an unexplained way.
On the other hand, Jo Jae Young goes missing, which puts his aunt, Jo Jung Hyun, in great tension. She goes to Choi Hyung for help to find her niece. Later, they discover that all are connected somehow connected to the serial murderer Kyung Ho and a mysterious cult. Both join hands to investigate and bring out the truth, along with rescuing the disappeared kid.
Ending Explained
The last episode of the drama has many viewers speechless and, at the time, confused. Since all the murders or casualties are happening in the mysterious village, Saju is finally uncovering. But the way they were revealed in a chaotic manner made viewers a bit confused.
Hometown is a creepy drama that requires patience from the viewers to watch. Despite it having only 12 episodes, the makers tried to present it in such a way that viewers could come up with their theory.
Throughout the whole drama, many questions were going around in the heads of viewers, like what is the deal with Im Gwan and why he is after the detective or how the detective Hyung In’s wife was killed or how she was related?
However, by the end of the drama, we clearly kind of understand that the main body operating this mishappening in the village and the murder of the people was led by the cult of an anonymous so-called almighty man called “Guru.”
But it is still understandable what was the reason for the cult of doing so or what did they gain by doing so. The drama leaves many questions just like this with no answers to find, and this is what makes it more creepy or head-scratching to watch.
By the end of the drama, we finally get to know the killings were happening because of hallucinations, hypnosis, and mind manipulation. But how they were happening is still a mystery unsolved.
