Though things have only fallen under her rule and are not so great, no matter how anyone cooks them, she has trained the kids to listen to her.
The MC is her stepson; they have no blood relation, just a common family member. MC had his issues with the main family earlier but is beyond it now. Now, he follows his missions and tries to make a name for himself, but is fated to cross paths with his family.

And like the good audience, they ran away once they realized they couldn’t offer much to the fight. Predictably, this led to one of the side characters insulting them for running away and not doing their due diligence. The characters didn’t care about them for long and looked at the loot they had dropped.
The loot turned out to be a kidnapped monk and sage they had not heard of before, but the two kidnapped were the most surprised. The two had gone out to investigate people from their sect, only for them to go missing. They didn’t imagine they would learn about it this way by being kidnapped.

Leaving the main character and his brother to deal with the main dish. And those people will be none other than the main instigators behind all that has been happening.
The ones behind the kidnappings of monks and sages, with the bandits going out and being brave in looting people. One couldn’t expect something like that from bandits, but these instigators will know how their plan was all along.
