Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh reiterated on Wednesday that his organization remains steadfast in its demands for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
These conditions include a complete withdrawal of Israeli military forces from the region. Despite recent diplomatic efforts, including Israeli officials’ discussions in Egypt, there has been no visible progress, according to a Palestinian mediator.
In his televised address marking Al-Quds (Jerusalem) Day, Haniyeh emphasized Hamas’s commitment to key stipulations for a ceasefire. These include the permanent cessation of hostilities, the return of displaced individuals to their homes, and the provision of essential aid for Gaza’s inhabitants.
Additionally, Hamas seeks to rebuild Gaza, lift the blockade, and negotiate a prisoner exchange deal with Israel.
The prisoner exchange Haniyeh referred to pertains to Palestinian detainees held by Israel in exchange for Israeli hostages held by militants in Gaza since the conflict’s outbreak following an assault by Hamas on Israel in October.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has expressed a willingness for a temporary truce solely aimed at securing the release of hostages. However, Hamas insists on a comprehensive resolution to the conflict.
Meanwhile, negotiations remain deadlocked over issues such as the return of displaced Palestinians and the fate of long-serving detainees. Hamas demands the freedom of movement for displaced individuals, particularly those from northern Gaza evacuated by Israeli orders.
Israeli military Chief of Staff Lieutenant-General Herzi Halevi emphasized the priority of securing the release of hostages, stating that Israeli forces will intensify efforts to facilitate negotiations.
Of the 253 individuals seized by Hamas during the October rampage, 134 remain in captivity in Gaza, creating a pressing humanitarian concern amidst the ongoing conflict.
