The Israeli military unveiled footage purportedly showing Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar inside a tunnel beneath Khan Younis in Gaza, accompanied by family members. Israel accuses Sinwar of orchestrating the October 7 terror attack, making him a prime target in the conflict.
Israel Defense Forces spokesman Daniel Hagari presented the video, obtained from a Hamas CCTV camera on October 10, during a press conference. However, CNN cannot verify its authenticity, and the IDF didn’t offer additional evidence.
Hagari emphasized the military’s determination to capture Sinwar, labeling him as “dead or alive.” Despite previous attempts to locate him, including surrounding his house in December, Sinwar has evaded capture. Israeli forces believe he remains in Gaza, despite ongoing assaults on Khan Younis.
The IDF also released a second video showing alleged Hamas tunnels where Sinwar might be hiding, claiming to have found large sums of money. CNN cannot independently verify these claims.
Sinwar, a key Hamas figure, has longstanding ties with regional Arab powers and leads the group’s political and military wings. He has been designated a global terrorist by the US and sanctioned by the UK and France.
The conflict intensified after the October 7 attack, prompting Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. Thousands have been killed or injured, and millions displaced. Israel’s blockade has worsened conditions, leading to acute food shortages and deadly diseases.
Despite international calls for ceasefire, the violence persists, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
