Gunther’s reign as the WWE Intercontinental Champion, which began in June 2022, made history as the longest-ever. However, at WrestleMania 40, his impressive reign came to a close.
Chad Gable mentored Sami Zayn, who faced Gunther for the Intercontinental Championship. Despite Gunther’s dominance, Zayn’s determination led to victory. With a series of powerful Helluva Kicks, Zayn secured the win, ending Gunther’s reign.
Reflecting on WrestleMania 40 Loss
In an interview on Gorilla Position, Gunther addressed whether Zayn was the right choice to end his reign. He acknowledged Zayn’s suitability but also mentioned Chad Gable as a worthy contender.
“I don’t think there was one right person. I think there would have been a few options. Chad is the other one that would have made a lot of sense. Sami is definitely one of those where it was ‘he’s the right guy to do it.’ He’s absolutely a fantastic professional wrestler. He has the natural connection with the audience.”
Gunther also praised Zayn’s relatable persona and in-ring prowess, making him an ideal challenger.
Following WrestleMania, Gunther appeared on RAW after Giovanni Vinci’s departure from Imperium. It was revealed that Gunther and Ludwig Kaiser will continue working together on WWE shows, hinting at exciting future plans.
