Gunther, the wrestler who held the Intercontinental Championship for a record-breaking length of time, recently revealed why his move to the main roster from NXT UK took so long. In an interview, Gunther pointed the finger at former WWE CEO Vince McMahon for the delay.
Gunther Didn’t Like McMahon’s Vision
Gunther, known as “The Ring General,” started wrestling for NXT UK in 2019 and became their longest-reigning champion.
Despite support from Triple H, his official main roster debut didn’t happen until April 2022. He did appear at Survivor Series 2019 as part of Team NXT, but his brief time there solidified his feelings.
According to Gunther, Vince McMahon’s vision for Raw and SmackDown at the time didn’t appeal to him as a wrestler. He prefers a more focused in-ring experience, and the “bells and whistles” of McMahon’s shows weren’t a good fit. He believes his Survivor Series appearance confirmed his reservations.
Despite the past, Gunther isn’t dwelling on it. He’s currently competing in the King of the Ring tournament and faces Jey Uso next week. Fans will have to wait and see how he performs in this prestigious competition.
