Almost five years after the troubled launch of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, Grove Street Games has publicly addressed the criticism that surrounded the remastered collection. The studio acknowledged that many fan complaints were justified but argued that the way the game was released also played a major role in shaping its negative reception.
The remastered collection, which includes Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, debuted in November 2021 and quickly became one of Rockstar’s most controversial releases. Players criticized the package for technical issues, visual glitches, inconsistent character models, missing music, and other problems that overshadowed the return of three landmark open-world games.
Grove Street Games reflects on the backlash
Speaking to Wccftech, Thomas Williamson, owner and CEO of Grove Street Games, admitted that he agreed with much of the community’s reaction to the remaster.
“Regarding GTA Trilogy: Definitive Edition, I agreed with most of the people’s reactions.”
However, Williamson believes the situation was made worse by factors beyond the game’s development.
“We did not agree with how the game was released and the response to it from a development side, and I think that would have changed the narrative significantly.”
Although he did not elaborate on specific release decisions, the comments suggest the studio believes the rollout and surrounding circumstances intensified the criticism following launch.

Despite the widespread backlash, Williamson noted that internal data painted a more balanced picture than public discussion suggested.
“Looking at the behind-the-scenes metrics on those games, there were a lot of people who were playing them and really enjoying them. There was also a lot of people who wanted more, and I don’t blame them.”
He added that everyone at the studio understood how important the original trilogy remains within gaming history and appreciated the opportunity to work on such iconic titles.
At the same time, Williamson acknowledged the enormous challenge of remastering games that carry decades of nostalgia.
“I don’t think there’ll ever be a perfect redux of those that’s not done by Rockstar proper.”
GTA Trilogy remains one of gaming’s most debated remasters
When Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition launched in 2021, the collection was widely criticized for numerous technical issues. Rockstar Games temporarily removed the PC version shortly after release after unused files, including developer assets and licensed music, were discovered within the game.
Rockstar has since released multiple updates that improved performance, visuals, and gameplay across all three remasters. While many technical issues have been addressed, the collection continues to be referenced as a cautionary example of the challenges involved in modernizing beloved classics.
As Rockstar Games focuses on the future of the Grand Theft Auto franchise, Grove Street Games has shifted its attention to original projects, including its upcoming multiplayer action game Beastlink.
